Apple Watch notification helps save man's life: 'It would have been fatal' | SoTechNaija

An Apple Watch notification helped save a man’s life after it alerted him to needing immediate medical attention for a blood clot in his lungs.

James Green, a podcast and reporter, from Brooklyn, New York, tweeted: “Never thought a stupid lil wrist computer I bought two years ago would save my life.
“Saw my heart rate go up, ended up being a pulmonary embolism.”

The 28-year-old says he owes his life to the HeartWatch app, which monitors a person’s heart rate constantly throughout the day and notifies them when it goes above or below a certain threshold.
He told The Telegraph his doctor was glad he called, telling him that if he had waited any longer “it would have been fatal”.

Mr Green describes himself as “a serial health tracker”, explaining: “I wanted data on my heart since I had a previous pulmonary embolism.
“And my watch is too old to have the new software update that enabled the heart rate alerts.”

Recalling the moment he realised something was wrong, he said: “I got an alert from Heart Watch that my heart rate was continually above my resting heart rate of 54, even when I was just sitting at my desk.

Apple iOS 11 Release Removes Massive New Feature

Apple AAPL-0.75% iOS 11 launches tomorrow and it brings a mass of new features. But unfortunately Apple has today confirmed one of the biggest has been removed from the launch…

In a blog post Apple notes its new person-to-person money transfer system for iPhone and iPad, called ‘Apple Pay Cash’, will no longer be part of the iOS 11 release. Apple Cash Pay was part of iOS 11 betas until Apple pulled it from later releases, which implied all was not well. Instead Apple now lists the service as “coming this fall”.
Apple
Apple iOS 11 is launching without a major new feature for iPhone and iPad
Apple describes the service as follows:
“[U]sers will be able to send and receive money from friends and family quickly, easily and securely. Pay and get paid right in Messages, or tell Siri to pay someone, using the credit and debit cards they have in Wallet. When users get paid, they receive the money in their new Apple Pay Cash card in Apple Wallet and can use the money instantly.”

Interestingly Apple has previously said Siri’s machine learning will work with Apple Cash Pay allowing it to automatically suggest amounts to send users based on the context of an iMessage conversion. Whether this is helpful or potentially exploitable remains to be seen.
Apple

Apple Cash Pay’s omission from iOS 11 is not the only major feature pulled from Apple’s upcoming releases. The company has already stated the much anticipated integration of Apple Music with the LTE Apple Watch will not come until at least October. Similarly External GPU support has been pulled from macOS High Sierra and pushed right back to “spring 2018”.

That said Apple fans won’t be short of distractions while waiting for these features. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus already up from pre-order while sales of the all new (and controversially priced) iPhone X will begin in October.

BREAKING NEWS: ASUU Officially Calls Off Strike, Orders Lecturers To Resume On Tuesday | SoTechNaija

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has officially announced a conditional suspension of its over 5-week old nationwide strike.
The President of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, announced the suspension while addressing a news conference at about 9.30 pm on Monday night after another round of meeting with the government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige in Abuja.
The union also directed its members to return to the classroom with immediate effect – tomorrow, Tuesday.

The ASUU President said it was suspending the strike till end of October for government to fulfill its pledges.

He said that the union will not hesitate to resume the suspended action if the government renege on the signed agreement which he called Memorandum of Action, adding that the signed agreement was backed by a definite timeline for implementation.

He warned that the government must not deliberately dishonor the agreement, pointing out that the continuous breach of signed agreement has been responsible for the constant strike action in the Universities.
Ogunyemi said that the current agreement with the government is based on mutual trust between the union and the government, adding that the trust of the union must be respected by the government.

It is understood that the meeting, which started about 4.00pm was supposed to last for about one hour, but dragged for about four hours before agreement was reached on all contending issues.

Bitcion Predicted to crash: Jamie Dimon Slams Bitcoin as a ‘Fraud’

  • Dimon compares bitcoin to tulip mania, predicting a collapse
  • Still, he says, it’s a good option for murderers, drug dealers

JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon said he would fire any employee trading bitcoin for being “stupid.”
The cryptocurrency “won’t end well,” he told an investor conference in New York on Tuesday, predicting it will eventually blow up. “It’s a fraud” and “worse than tulip bulbs.”
If a JPMorgan trader began trading in bitcoin, he said, “I’d fire them in a second. For two reasons: It’s against our rules, and they’re stupid. And both are dangerous.”
Bitcoin has soared in recent months, spurred by greater acceptance of the blockchain technology that underpins the exchange method and optimism that faster transaction times will encourage broader use of the cryptocurrency. Prices have climbed more than four-fold this year -- a run that has drawn debate over whether that’s a bubble.
Bitcoin slipped after Dimon’s remarks. It was down 1 percent as of 4 p.m. in New York. Last week, it slumped after reports that China plans to ban trading of virtual currencies on domestic exchanges, dealing another blow to the $150 billion cryptocurrency market.

Tulips are a reference to the mania that swept Holland in the 17th century, with speculators driving up prices of virtually worthless tulip bulbs to exorbitant levels. That didn’t end well.
In bitcoin’s case, Dimon said he’s skeptical authorities will allow a currency to exist without state oversight, especially if something goes wrong. “Someone’s going to get killed and then the government’s going to come down,” he said. “You just saw in China, governments like to control their money supply.”
Dimon differentiated between the bitcoin currency and the underlying blockchain technology, which he said can be useful. Still, he said banks’ application of blockchain “won’t be overnight.”

The bank chief said he wouldn’t short bitcoin because there’s no telling how high it will go before it collapses. The best argument he’s heard, he said, is that it can be useful to people in places with no other options -- so long as the supply of coins doesn’t surge.
“If you were in Venezuela or Ecuador or North Korea or a bunch of parts like that, or if you were a drug dealer, a murderer, stuff like that, you are better off doing it in bitcoin than U.S. dollars,” he said. “So there may be a market for that, but it’d be a limited market.”

To be sure, Dimon later noted that his daughter purchased some bitcoin.
One place where cryptocurrencies and traditional finance are coming together is at CBOE Holdings Inc., the owner of the Chicago Board Options Exchange. Last month, the firm teamed up with Gemini Trust Co. -- the startup created by the Winklevoss twins made famous by the 2010 Facebook film “The Social Network” -- with a plan to offer bitcoin futures.
CBOE’s chairman and CEO, Ed Tilly, defended such efforts after Dimon’s remarks.
“Like it or not, people want exposure to bitcoin,” Tilly said. Believers can bet on its rise, and Dimon is welcome to take the other side, he said. “We’re happy to be the ones in the middle.”

Best Auto Insurance Companies In 2017

If you want the best protection money can buy, buying an auto policy from one of the best car insurance companies is essential. By buying a high quality policy from a reputable provider, you’ll gain both peace of mind and protection from life-changing financial losses.

While there are plenty of companies to choose from, the best car insurance companies offer certain features that help them stand out.
In addition to policies that can be tailored to your unique insurance needs, they generally offer superior customer service, an up-to-date website where you can pay your bill or check your policy details, and a top notch claims process that makes recovering from an auto accident as seamless as possible.

Because car insurance has become such a competitive space, shopping around for the best automobile insurance rates is crucial. Where one company might charge higher rates due to your age or driving history, another might offer special discounts based on an entirely different set of criteria.

Most of the time, the only way to find out how much you’ll pay is to apply for several quotes and compare them side by side.
This post was created to introduce some of the best car insurance companies in the business, plus provide an overview of how each business operates.

Best Auto Insurance Companies In 2017
When your goal is finding the best policy at an attractive price, it pays to compare several of the highest rated companies side by side. When figuring out which companies to highlight, we looked at Reviews.com Auto Insurance Study and J.D. Power’s 2016 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. From those studies, we handpicked several companies that received high ratings across the board. Thus, the best auto insurance companies In 2017 are;
  1. Liberty Mutual
  2. Allstate Insurance
  3. USAA
  4. Auto-Owners Insurance
  5. Progressive
  6. State Farm
  7. The Hartford

Liberty Mutual Insurance

Founded in 1912, Liberty Mutual Insurance insures more than 1.5 million vehicles and has some of the top customer service ratings.
Why you might like Liberty Mutual:
  • Ranked “among the best” by J.D. Power's 2016 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study
  • Great standard coverage, as well as the option to add:
    • Accident forgiveness: Your insurance rates won't go up when you're involved in your first accident.
    • New car replacement: If you total your car when it's less than a year old and has fewer than 15,000 miles, they'll reimburse you the cost of a new car, not just the depreciated value.
    • Better car replacement: You'll be reimbursed for a car that is one model year newer and 15,000 fewer miles than your totaled car.
    • Deductible fund: Reduce your deductible by $100 when you add this feature, and then another $100 every year after that.
  • 24-hour claims service
Why you should keep looking:
  • Policies can be expensive if you are purchasing a single policy.

USAA

USAA received extremely high marks from J.D. Power’s Claims Satisfaction Survey, including 5/5 in overall customer satisfaction. In addition, USAA customers were extremely satisfied with their final settlement after an accident, which is one of the most important indicators or a high quality insurance company.
The biggest downside to USAA is that it is only available to members or former members of the United State military and their close family members. So, if you’re in the general public, you won’t have the opportunity to buy a policy from USAA.
Why you might like USAA:
  • Top ratings, including overall customer satisfaction
  • Superior customer service
  • Diverse policy options to meet anyone’s needs

Allstate Insurance

If you’re looking for a car insurance company that offers high quality insurance policies with the opportunity for discounts, Allstate Insurance should be on your short list. Allstate received fairly high ratings across both studies mentioned in this article, with its highest marks received from customers who reported a positive rental car experience.
Allstate Insurance offers the best of both worlds when it comes to the user experience. With brick and mortar offices and agents placed all over the country plus a user-friendly and helpful website, customers have the opportunity to get in-person help or access information online at any time.
Why you might like Allstate:
  • Most areas have a physical office and local agents
  • Multiple opportunities for discounts for bundling, anti-theft devices, and passive restraint
  • Consumer-friendly website
Why you should keep looking:
  • Several comparable companies received higher ratings across the board
  • Can be expensive if you don’t bundle policies

Auto-Owners Insurance

While Auto-Owners Insurance keeps a fairly low profile, they receive extremely high marks across the board. In fact, J.D. Power awarded Auto-Owners Insurance the highest rating in their 2015 Auto Claims Study, with a 5/5 in every category except for rental car experience. That puts Auto-Owners Insurance ahead of the pack in terms of overall customer satisfaction whenever a claim is filed.
The fact that Auto-Owners Insurance has been around since 1916 should also put consumer’s minds at ease. During that time, they have exhibited financial stability consistently. Auto-Owners Insurance also has 6,300 independent agents, meaning you can buy your policy directly from an individual who understands your needs.
Why you might like Auto-Owners Insurance:
  • High ratings for customer service and claims experiences
  • Individual agents who care
  • Variety of discounts available
Why you should keep looking:
  • Policies can be expensive if you don’t qualify for discounts
  • Website isn’t as user-friendly as it could be

Progressive

Progressive Insurance is known for its constant barrage of advertisements, but they also have a solid base of customers who seem quite happy with their products. Although they didn’t receive the best marks possible from J.D. Power’s 2015 Claims Study, they come in extremely competitive when it comes to pricing.
Other benefits Progressive offers include plenty of opportunity for discounts, a solid online presence, and their Snapshot program, which rewards good driving behavior.
Why you might like Progressive:
  • Plenty of available discounts and competitive pricing
  • Great online presence
Why you might keep looking:
  • Other companies receive higher ratings across the board
  • Scarce individualized attention from agents

State Farm

Founded in 1922, State Farm Insurance has a history of financial stability and customer service satisfaction. With physical offices and agents dispersed throughout the country, State Farm is also known for offering individual service that simply cannot be matched by online-only firms.
The company’s biggest benefits include its brick-and-mortar stores and agents, the many discounts it offers, and its strong mobile app. State Farm also makes it easy and painless to get quotes online, which means you don’t have to head into a local office if you don’t want to.
Why you might like State Farm:
  • Local offices and agents provide in-person help
  • Great mobile app and website
  • Plenty of discounts available
Why you might keep looking:
  • Average ratings from J.D. Power

The Hartford

With more than 200 years of history in business, The Hartford has built an excellent reputation for customer service and claims processing. As of today, the company is still receiving high marks from companies like J.D. Power. In its 2015 Auto Claims Satisfaction study, The Hartford received excellent marks (4/5 or 5/5) in every category except for service interaction.
Although The Hartford is an old company, they still offer some of the best technology in the business. Using their website, you can shop around for and even apply for a new policy. Plus, you’ll have 24/7 access to agents either on the phone or online.
Why you might like The Hartford:
  • Multiple policy discounts
  • Top ratings for claims management
  • Guaranteed renewals of your policy as long as you can drive
Why you might keep looking:
  • Low ratings for service experiences during the claims process
  • The best benefits go to AARP members
Why you might keep looking:
  • Only available to U.S. military members, veterans, or their close family members

HOW TO PICK A POLICY WITH THE BEST AUTO INSURANCE COMPANIES

Knowing which companies received the highest marks year after year is just part of the battle. Beyond researching the best auto insurance companies on the market, you’ll also need to decide which type of policy to buy – and how much coverage you really need. On top of those factors, you'll need to consider how high your deductible should be.
Consumer Reports offers an extremely helpful guide that highlights the steps you can take to find the best policy for your needs. Even if you’re fairly happy with your policy, they suggest shopping around to compare rates at least every two or three years. That way, you have a good idea of where car insurance rates are headed and how much you could save if you switch. Plus, it never hurts to shop around. Based on your age, your driving record, and other factors, the policy you have now could be considerably cheaper if you switched firms.
Here are some tips to consider as you shop around and compare policies:

Pick a top-rated insurer

By checking auto insurance ratings, you gain insight from each company’s existing customer base. Consumer Reports suggests reading through the most recent auto insurance claims and satisfaction studies to see which companies consistently come out on top.

Set the right deductible

No matter whether you buy liability coverage or full coverage for your vehicle, you need to pick a deductible that meets you needs. Consumer Reports suggests choosing a higher deductible if you want to save on monthly premiums, but setting a lower deductible if you want to avoid a large out-of-pocket expense in the event of a car accident. “If you have a good driving record and haven’t had an at-fault accident in years, or ever, opting for a higher deductible on collision coverage might be a good bet,” writes Consumer Reports. Just remember to keep that much cash on hand in case you need it.

Don’t buy state minimum coverage if you truly want a high quality auto policy

While state minimum coverage is less expensive in the short-term, it can prove extremely costly if you have a claim that far exceeds the cap on the policy you purchased. By investing in a policy that offers more generous coverage limits, you can save yourself some heartache and protect your personal property in the event of a costly accident.

Ask friends and family for recommendations

While reading auto insurance provider reviews and ratings is a smart move, you can also ask family and friends for their recommendations. General ratings can help you gauge the quality of any company; however, personal reviews tend to hold more weight. Ask friends and family members whether they have had a good experience with their auto insurer before you purchase a policy. You may be able to nail down the best insurer for your needs based on the suggestions of others.

Get quotes from multiple companies

If you’ve read plenty of insurance company reviews and still can’t decide, it might help to get several quotes to compare. Depending on where you live and other factors, one company could offer a much better deal on auto insurance than the rest. In this scenario – where one company is much cheaper over all – you should figure out why the price is so affordable. Are you comparing apples to apples?

Compare similar policies

Speaking of an “apples to apples” comparison, this part of your search is crucial. To find the right auto insurance company and policy for your needs, you need to compare similar auto insurance policies among multiple providers. This means comparing policies with the same levels of coverage and a similar deductible.

HOW TO CHOOSE CAR INSURANCE COVERAGE LIMITS

While you can buy a similar level of auto insurance coverage from multiple insurers, it might be wise to tailor your policy to your specific needs. The higher your coverage limits, the more you’ll generally pay for your premiums. However, having higher coverage limits also means more security in the event of a catastrophic accident. The same is true for your deductible as well; with a lower deductible, you’ll pay a lot less out-of-pocket if an accident should occur. On the flip side, you’ll pay higher premiums to have a lower annual deductible.
As you navigate the intricacies of comparing policies among different insurers, it’s important to decide on the coverage limits you’re comfortable with as well. Consider these tips as you move forward with the purchase of a new auto insurance policy to meet your needs:

Consider your assets

If you own your home and have plenty of other assets, you should consider buying a policy with higher coverage limits than what is normally offered. For more peace of mind, consider buying the top tier of auto coverage to protect your family. With more coverage in place, you can ensure you won’t run out of coverage in the event of a catastrophic accident – or worse, get sued by someone who plans to go after your assets in court.
Of course, some people also buy a generic umbrella policy to kick in in times like these. With an umbrella policy, you’ll have additional coverage to tap into if your auto insurance policy’s limits have been reached, or if someone sues you in a court of law.

Take your car payment into account.

If you paid cash for your car or paid it off slowly over time, it’s your right to choose an auto insurance policy with any limits you desire. If you financed your car and still owe money, on the other hand, your lender might dictate the type of policy you have to buy.
Most lenders who carry auto loans will require you to add comprehensive coverage with collision benefits to your policy. This type of coverage is definitely more expensive, but it will help defray the costs if you should damage or total your car while you’re still making payments.
Gap coverage is another type of coverage that will “bridge the gap” between what your car is worth and how much you owe. Since many newer cars tend to lose value quickly, this type of coverage can be a smart purchase towards the beginning of your auto loan.

Figure out what kind of driver you are

If you’re a reliable driver who has never been in an accident, having the highest levels of coverage may be the last thing on your mind. If you’re not a great driver or have been in several accidents, on the other hand, you may be keenly aware of just how important those coverage limits are.
At the end of the day, the type of driver you are and how often you drive may play a part in the coverage limits you select. If you drive infrequently, you may be more comfortable with lower or average limits. If you drive at high risk times or commute back and forth to work, on the other hand, more or better coverage might help you sleep better at night.

Decide how much you can afford to pay if you have an accident

Coverage limits play a huge role in how much your auto insurance premiums cost, but so will your deductible. Since you’ll be required to pay your deductible in full to access your insurance benefits after an accident, it’s important to make sure your deductible is affordable enough you can cover it with your savings. The right auto policy for your needs will have the right combination of healthy coverage limits with an annual deductible you can actually afford.

WANT THE LOWEST AUTO INSURANCE RATES? DO THIS.

While auto insurance rates are extremely competitive, they still vary widely depending on the company you use and the type of policy you purchase. With that being said, there are still plenty of ways to keep your costs lower than average. If price is an important consideration in your search, consider these tips:

Ask about discounts

Some of the best car insurance companies offer discounts on anything from bundled policies to good credit, zero claims, theft protection devices, and more. Others offer discounts for paying your six-month premium in-full or installing an electronic device that lets the company monitor your driving habits over the long haul.
Allstate Insurance, for example, offers Drivewise – a discount program for customers who install a tracking device into their vehicle. By letting Allstate monitor your driving habits, you can qualify for a discount of up to 30 percent.

Take advantage of low mileage discounts

If you work at home or have a short commute to work, some car insurance firms will extend a discount. Low mileage discounts can also apply if you carpool to work and share miles and expenses.

Qualifying for a low mileage discount may require you to prove how much you drive each year. Further, each auto insurance company has their own limits on how many miles you can rack up and still qualify for this discount.
The best way to find out if you qualify for a low mileage discount is to ask your auto insurance agent when you apply for coverage – or even after you qualify.

Shop around.

If your goal is saving money, the most important step in your search for car insurance is shopping around. Auto insurance rates can easily vary by hundreds of dollars per year with the same car and driver. If you want the best shot at affordable rates, it’s crucial to shop around with at least 5-6 auto insurance firms.
Fortunately, shopping around online or over the phone is easy.
Most of the time, a quick phone call or online inquiry is all it takes to get a handful of new auto insurance quotes in minutes. Make sure to shop with private companies and insurance brokers who may be able to offer a car insurance quote from different insurers.
Also, don’t base your decision on price alone. Where securing an affordable policy is important, the quality of your auto insurance policy is equally crucial. Buying a cut-rate policy won’t leave you better off if you get in a wreck and really need coverage. When shopping for a policy, you should focus on price and value.

Consider raising your deductible

Whether you’re shopping around for a new auto insurance policy or planning to keep the one you have, raising your annual deductible is a smart way to save on your monthly premiums.

If you want a $500 deductible to access your auto coverage, your insurance will be more expensive than if you chose a $1,000 deductible from the start. To save money, you should choose the highest deductible you can reasonably afford to pay.
If you do choose to go with a higher deductible, make sure you keep enough cash on-hand to cover it at any time. If you have a $1,000 deductible on your auto policy, for example, you should set aside at least that much in an account – or make sure you keep enough cash to cover your deductible in your regular emergency fund.

Reduce coverage on older cars

While you might consider full coverage on your cars, that doesn’t mean you need it. Where full coverage is smart on newer cars, liability insurance coverage may be a smarter move for older, paid-off models.
To find your break-even point, check out how much your car is actually worth on a website like Kelley Blue Book. If the cost of full coverage on your car is nearly as much as the car is worth itself, converting your policy to liability only can help you save money without jeopardizing your financial life.

Keep your credit in good shape

Most of the best auto insurance companies check your credit before they extend a new policy. If your credit is excellent, this will only help you get the best auto insurance rates. If your credit is poor, on the other hand, you might be asked to pay a whole lot more.

To keep your credit in good health, check your credit score and report frequently. While Credit Karma lets you see an estimate of your credit score for free at any time, AnnualCreditReport.com is a government-approved website that lets you see your full credit report from all three credit reporting agencies once per year for free.

Keep insurance costs in mind when you choose a car

The newer your car is, the more expensive your car insurance premiums will likely be. Also consider the fact that some car models with expensive replacement parts can cost more to insure regardless of age.

Consumer Reports suggests asking your car dealer to show you the “Relative Collision Insurance Cost Information Booklet,” produced annually by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That way, you’ll be in the best position to avoid models with insurance costs that are higher than most.

CONCLUSION

When shopping around on the best deal for auto insurance, it’s important to look at more than just premiums. The best auto insurance companies should offer more than affordability – they should also receive good ratings and reviews from their existing customer base, same goes for life insurance, burial insurance and health insurance.

The best way to find this out is to complete some research on your own. Look at some of the recent studies completed and read through them, then read as many online reviews as you can find. Also, make sure to shop around and compare rates among the handful of companies you feel comfortable with. The more you shop around and compare, the better off you’ll be.

iPhone 8 Leak Reveals A Nasty New Surprise

iPhone 8 leak | Reveals a Nasty new surprise..

Apple AAPL +1.02%’s iPhone 8 is going to get a lot right. My exclusive images confirm a dramatic upgrade, its biggest changes combine cutting edge with overdue catch-ups and it feels great in-hand. But my time with a late stage prototype has also confirmed one infuriating design flaw…

‘Great Secret Features’ and ‘Nasty Surprises’ are my regular columns investigating the latest hardware and software for the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines

iPhone 8's enlarged camera causes usability issues (finalized prototype pictured)
For all its inevitable photographic improvements, Apple’s new vertically aligned dual rear camera causes physical problems. I’ll break them down:

#1 Shake, Rattle And Roll
In a nutshell, the iPhone 8 is a pain to use on a flat surface. Why? Because the protrusion of the new rear cameras is not only bigger this year, it also extends further down the phone. This means on a flat surface the iPhone 8 rocks, rolls and rattles a lot more than even the iPhone 7 Plus (whose horizontal rear cameras provide more stability).

I also find the increased angle the iPhone 8 lies at when flat to be inconvenient, though I’m sure others will cope just fine. That said you’re going to want to pick up the iPhone 8 to use comfortably more than previous iPhones so it wouldn’t have been the worst compromise if Apple had built Touch ID into the back rather than ditching it altogether.

iPhone 8 rests at a significant angle when flat
#2 Wear, Tear and Contact Area
The other issue the iPhone 8’s new vertical cameras create is one of contact.
Firstly the enlarged cameras lift the whole back of the phone off a flat surface so every impact when putting the iPhone 8 down is to the cameras’ rim and opposite bottom corner of the phone (the two pivot points which cause the phone to rock). With Apple switching to a glass chassis this may protect the back, but there are two clear contact points which will surely scuff and scratch over time.
Secondly, don’t put the iPhone 8 on a slippy surface. Again these two minimal contact points (maybe a few millimeters square in total) mean this smartphone is going to slip and slide all over the place. The Nexus 4 was a similarly suicidal phone so be very careful where you put the iPhone 8 down.
The Case Problem
Of course, I know what the main counterpoint to all this is: just put a case on it! Well yes and no.

iPhone 8 looks incredible, but you're going to have to put a case on it
Firstly buying a case should be a choice and not something to simply make a phone usable/safe on a flat surface, and secondly, iPhone 8 cases will need to be substantially thicker to both level out the smartphone and still provide enough protection for the cameras’ rim.

It’s a shame. The iPhone 8 is a stunning looking phone but I doubt many owners will get to see it much.

The Sensible Solution
Ultimately the more sensible solution should come from Apple. It should either double down its efforts to create a flush camera like produced with iPhones 1-5 or fill out the rest of the smartphone with a larger battery to hide the bump. Two birds, one stone.

Personally, I’ve been arguing for the latter for many years, but with the iPhone 8 set to be the most expensive iPhone in history (and a rare find at launch) maybe Apple will label its increased camera protrusion as a feature. After all, it will remind you this prized device needs a case everytime you put it down…

iPhone 8 Release Date

Apple leaks: confirm's iphone 8 released date

iPhone 8 will change everything for fans. It will look like no other iPhone, work like no other iPhone and cost far more than any previous iPhone. But if you’re still hooked then there’s one detail remaining: when will it be released? And now we know…

Letting the cat out the bag is the Wall Street Journal which states Tim Cook will unveil the iPhone 8 on September 12. It cites sources at Dow Jones and I have now also been able to confirm this date as well.

iPhone 8 will look like no previous iPhone
Interestingly, both my source and that at Dow Jones state Apple hopes to have the launch at the new Steve Jobs theatre which is on the grounds of the new Apple Campus. I say “hopes” as the WSJ notes it is still being built and to quote my

source:

“I have every confidence that the date the WSJ has mentioned is absolutely on the money. And in fact, just between ourselves, that the Steve Jobs Theatre is pretty much certain, too (though you know what builders are like).”

It is worth pointing out the Steve Jobs Theatre is not the only thing facing a race against time. The iPhone 8 itself is suffering from significant production delays and will only be available in very limited quantities at launch (we should be 1-2 weeks from its 12 September unveiling).

iPhone 8 images tweaked to feature the exact display dimensions
Part of the reason for this is Apple’s failure to integrate Touch ID into the display, which has seen the company ditch the technology completely (at least according to the vast majority of my sources) rather than settle for it on the back or in the curiously enlarged power button. Its other headline feature, the vertically aligned dual rear camera, also brings some quirks of its own

That said it is the iPhone 8’s price which has most people talking. A whopping 54% increase over the iPhone 7 may well see some users run to the cheaper and more familiar guises of the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus which will both launch alongside it.

I obtained a finalised prototype of the iPhone 8 earlier this month for those wanting an extra close look at Apple’s overhauled iPhone. For everyone else, it’s now 15 days and counting…

iPhone 8 Exclusive: Apple's New Design 'Confirmed

iPhone 8 leaks have been unparalleled and a growing number suggest Apple AAPL +1.02% is planning to deliver its biggest ever iPhone redesign to celebrate the range’s 10th anniversary. Now with exclusive new information I can confirm that will happen…
Working with case designer Nodus, I have been able to obtain CAD files for the iPhone 8 through its supply chain. We have rendered these to visualise the final design and I can confirm that, despite problems, fears Apple would fall back on a less ambitious ‘Plan B’ are unfounded.
Apple's new iPhone 8 will looks like this

Consequently users can expect Apple to release an iPhone 8 which almost completely eliminates the chunky bezels of previous iPhones. An elongated and enlarged 5.8-inch display will feature a cutout at the top for the front facing camera and sensors and it should mean notifications switch to a new ‘Function Area’ in iOS 11.

In addition to this Apple will indeed replace the horizontally aligned dual rear camera of the iPhone 7 Plus with a vertically aligned shooter on the iPhone 8. This switch is to support Apple’s big drive into Augmented Reality where horizontally aligned cameras are more effective and the phone is expected to be held in a landscape orientation.

Furthermore, while it isn’t shown in the renders, I can also confirm the Lighting port will remain and there will be will no switch to USB Type-C on the iPhone 8 despite its widespread adoption on MacBooks. The headphone jack won’t be returning either.
Perhaps the biggest talking point, however, is the home button.
iPhone 8 power button size has been dramatically increased

Apple will almost double its size for the iPhone 8 and with Touch ID integration into the display still in doubt, the company could easily use this larger button to copy Sony and integrate Touch ID into the power button instead. This would be an unobtrusive workaround and Apple has already been granted a patent for this.

So how confident are Nodus and myself about the renders? To the extent that Nodus was happy for me to publicly disclose it as the source and reveal the company is prototyping its retail cases from them. Similar leaks saw Olixar go a step further and start selling Galaxy Note 8 cases last month.
Some iPhone 8 secrets do still remain: battery capacity, camera specifications, A11 chipset performance and whether it will be as jaw droppingly expensive as expected. But when it comes to its looks, ladies and gentlemen: this is the iPhone 8.

Household Robots Are the Next Thing to Get Hacked

Every new technology represents a chance for hackers. Now, two Argentinian security researchers are now planning on showing how domestic robots will be vulnerable to attacks.
Lucas Apa and Cesar Cerrudo, both of whom work at the security firm IOActive, have been sounding the alarm regarding robotic hacking for some time now. "If you are in the same network as the robot, then you can compromise it," Cerrudo told Motherboard in March. "I will have a robot at home and the office but I will unplug it at night and also when I'm not around I won't leave the robot alone—I won't trust it."
Now, the two are using the Hack in the Box security conference in Singapore to showcase what hacking could do to humanoid domestic robots known as the Alpha2 and NAO and larger, industrial robotic arms sold by Universal Robots. The duo says, with video proof, that they can turn adorable robots into violent entities quite easily.

Apa and Cerrudo found that the Alpha2, sold by the Chinese company UBTech, ran a version of Android that forgoes code-signing, a security measure that prevents the installation of rogue software. It also didn't encrypt its injections, allowing room for a malicious app to work its way inside. Similar errors were also found on the NAO, sold by the Japanese firm Softbank.

Beyond violent attacks, Apa and Cerrudo have found that the robots can also be subtle spies since the domestic robots come equipped with cameras and microphones.

While UBTech and Softbank have told Wired that their robots are safe, Apa and Cerrudo say that they have monitored updates on the robots robots and none of them address the serious safety issues they raise. "In a couple of years, these robots will be very tied into family life and business," Cerrudo tells Wired. "When they get hacked, there will be serious consequences."

Simple Steps To Track Your Lost Android Phone In 5 Minutes

Actually, if you use Android indeed, your phone is already per-configured with these tracker.

Here is what’s required:

1. Your phone must be connected to internet: if you are the type who likes putting off your data connection every time you need to upgrade today!

2. Your device must be connected with Gmail: I am aware that Android can't function to it full capacity if your Gmail is not connected so you've probably done this step if you are reading this.

Activating the Tracker: Turn this on permanently>> ‘Android Device Manager (ADM)’ or Google Find My Device in some devices and grant it access to look-up your location.

This is how to do that:

- Go to Settings>>Security>>Device Administration

Enable ‘Android Device Manager’ to perform all the tasks listed for it.

With this technology, you can:

- Track your phone
- Let it ring and
- Wipe the data
- Even call it…

…directly from a computer.

Here is how to do the above:

First Method:

- If you have the ADM configured on your phone and it is missing all you have to do is to find a computer, sign into Gmail and then go to Google.com, type 'where is my phone' without the quote.

- Click the first link on the search results or visit this link (https://myaccount.google.com/intro/find-your-phone) on the same browser and then selected your phone.

- At this stage you can then ring your phone or lock it or call it or locate it or Wipe it just by clicking on any of the options:

Note: even if your phone is on silence, as long as it internet access is enabled, it will RING out LOUD and clear!

Second Method:

Get another person's phone and install "Android Device Manager App" from Google playstore, sign into the app with your Gmail Account, the same account you signed in on your phone and then click on ‘find my device’.

- Actually, without clicking anything it should display your device’ current location and other options as listed above.

That's how to put a secrete tracker on your Android device be it a phone or a tablet.

If your phone is stolen just pray that the thief does not turn off the Internet connection because without it on your phone, you may not be able to track it or communicate with it using any of the above listed methods.

The best thing you can do is to always leave the internet access enabled and use password on your phone.

Third Method:

What if the thief turns off the phone completely? Or the phone goes off where you kept it?

All you have to do is to take precaution:

Here is how:

Turn on Location History on your device.

If you do this, Google will save the last known location of your device on your account and with it you will be able to have an idea of where your phone is last seen.

Here is how to turn on Location History on your Android Device:

First off all, Ensure location is permanently turned on: Swipe down the menu from the top of your device and tap the location icon to turn it on or off (That icon that looks like a rain drop).

Checking Location History:

Step 1: Log on to Google maps from any computer or phone using web browser. Use this link: www.Google.com/maps

Step 2: Sign in with your Gmail account, the one you signed in with on your device.

Step 3: Click the Menu on the top left side of the map (The three small lines).

Step 4: Click ‘Your timeline’.

Step 5: Choose the day you would like to see, if I where you I would choose Today. You can as well choose any other day you would like to see.

Note: you can delete this timeline location history at will. Just click the Bin Icon beneath the Map and it will delete it forever.

With all the methods listed above you should be able to track your Android Device for free and know the precise location or at most you will know the last known location.

Remember that to use this, location and internet connection needs to always be active on your device.

Meanwhile, there are other ways by which a device could be tracked without internet connection but it will require purchase of relevant hardware; maybe one of this days I will write about it but till then…

Use this tool today and share the information with loved ones.

Etisalat Escapes from loosing customers: Changes it Name to "9Mobile"

http://sotechnaija.blogspot.com/

Story line on Etisalat journey of living Nigeria, came as follow's;

The embattled Etisalat Nigeria on Thursday rallied to move away from the shadows of its troubles by taking a new brand name.
At end of a crucial management meeting of the telecom firm in Lagos, 9Mobile was unanimously adopted by the company as its new brand name.

Last Monday, the chief executive of Etisalat International, Hatem Dowidar, said Etisalat Group would, in the next three weeks, phase out the brand name in Nigeria.
The decision followed Emirates Telecommunications Group (Etisalat Group) withdrawal of further involvement in the ownership of the Nigerian subsidiary.

Until June 15, the United Arab Emirates, UAE, group was a major shareholder in Etisalat Nigeria, along with United Arab Emirates Sovereign Wealth Fund through Mubadala Development Company, Abu Dhabi.
The two affiliates controlled a combined 85 per cent equity in the telecom firm, with Myacinth holding 15 per cent stake through Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services, EMTS Holding BV, owned by former United Bank for Africa, UBA, Chairman, Hakeem Bello-Osagie.

Opting to part ways with the company followed the crisis in the wake of the $1.2 billion (N377.4 billion) syndicated loan the telecom firm took in 2013 from a consortium of 13 Nigerian banks.
Etisalat Nigeria, Emirates Group disclosed in a filing with the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange it had transferred 100 per cent of its shares with EMTS Holding BV, a special purpose vehicle established in Netherlands, to United Capital Trustees Limited, legal trustees of the banks.
However, following the resignation a fortnight ago of its immediate past Chairman, Mr. Bello-Osagie, and last week’s reconstitution of the company’s Board of directors, the issue of the trading name the embattled firm would carry brought fresh headache to its management.

EMTS Vice President Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, Ibrahim Dikko, had weighed in with an explanation that the company had a valid and subsisting agreement with its former parent company, to continue using the Etisalat brand regardless of the recent restructuring of the Company.

Mr. Dikko gave a hint as to what the new name of the company could be. He recalled that at the launch of EMTS in Nigeria in 2008, “0809ja” was adopted, to affirm the “Nigerianness” of its origin and the company’s sphere of influence.
Following Thursday’s announcement of the new brand name, SoTechNaija learnt all staff of the company nationwide were sent notices of the change of name. The company’s new name is yet to be unveiled officially to the public.

Early this week, Mr. Dikko said the new brand name would not affect the company’s operations.
New chief executive, Boye Olusanya said the new management was mandated to ensure the business was run as profitable venture.
“What is most important now is to ensure the business runs and meets its obligations. We will focuss on getting the company back on track as soon as possible,” he said.

New features of Twitter Lets You Mute Notifications From Accounts You Don't Follow

http://sotechnaija.blogspot.com/

Twitter, in its latest step to curb abusive behaviour on its platform, rolled out new features on Monday to help users disable notifications from accounts that they want to avoid.

The micro-blogging website said its "advanced filter settings" will now have options for users to mute notifications from accounts that they do not follow as well as from accounts that do not follow them.
Users can also filter lower-quality content from notifications such as content that appears to be automated and mute notifications related to certain words and phrases.

Twitter had said in March that it would introduce new filtering options for notifications to allow users to limit what they see from certain types of accounts, such as those that do not have a profile photo.
Twitter and rival Facebook have been facing a barrage of criticism for failing to tackle cyber-bullying, fake news and extremist propaganda on their platforms.

Last week, a US judge ruled that Twitter could move forward with a lawsuit that aims to free technology companies to speak more openly about surveillance requests they receive from the US government.
The US government had failed to show the kind of "clear and present danger" that could possibly justify restraints Twitter's constitutional right to talk about surveillance requests, US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, said in a written order.

"The government's restrictions on Twitter's speech are content-based prior restraints subject to the highest level of scrutiny under the First Amendment," Rogers wrote.
The First Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees certain rights including freedom of speech.

The World’s Biggest Airport, built in Beijing’s Daxing District is the No.1 of all

http://sotechnaija.blogspot.com/

WowIt’s been over a year since the great Zaha Hadid sadly passed away, yet the renowned architect still manages to influence the entire world around us with her incredible designs. Soon to be built in Beijing’s Daxing District, this jaw dropping airport terminal building has been imagined by the late architect a few years ago, evoking the harmony and overwhelming inner calm of Chinese landscapes, with warm colors and materials taken from straight the traditional Chinese culture.

Taking airport levels to new heights, the luxurious flying hub before you will be apparently constructed by 2019, when it’s set to become the world’s biggest airport terminal. It will spread over a mammoth size of 700,000 square meters featuring separate areas for domestic and international flights, that will be hopefully highly optimized for today’s needs and traffic, and.. it will cost an astonishing $12 billion!!

And apart from this novel terminal building, a brand new high-speed train will be also constructed, taking passengers from the city center to the new Beijing airport surprisingly fast. The New Beijing airport is scheduled to take care of 100 million travelers every singleyear, and with the long list of amenities included, there is really no hurry. Remember the days when delayed flights were a drag? No more.

Indian Railways set to Launch New App That helps You Book Flight Tickets and Taxis

http://sotechnaija.blogsot.com

A new mobile app from the Indian Railways will now let you book flight tickets, among other things. The app, which is set to launch this week, will offer users options like booking a porter, retiring room, or ordering food apart from booking train tickets, of course, in an effort to create an integrated Railways app.

According to a senior Railway Ministry official, the app looks to provide an easier way for passengers to find what they are looking for when travelling, PTI reports. There are multiple apps of the Railways that offer specific services, but the official said that most of them are limited to a single service, and that there was a need for an app that offers multiple services in a single window interface.

In addition to train-related features, the app can also be used to book taxis, hotels and notably, even flight tickets.
The Integrated Railway Mobile App project was first announced during the Rail Budget 2016-17. It is being developed by the CRIS, the Railways' software arm, at a cost of Rs. 7 crores.

http:sotechnaija.blogsot.com/

"Presently we have different digital solutions for ticketing, grievance redressal and other issues. We intend to integrate all such facilities into two mobile apps, one dealing with all ticketing issues and the other for receipt and redressal of complaints and suggestions related to all our services," Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had said in his budget speech.

Separately, the Indian Railways on Wednesday will be launching RailCloud, a virtual server with an inbuilt security system that promises to provide faster connectivity at lower cost. This is being developed by PSU RailTel at an estimated cost of about Rs. 53 corers.

Huawei Plans to Raise Prices of Phones Available Online As Customs Duty Charges Increase

Days after the government announced a 10 percent basic customs duty (BCD) on smartphone manufacturers as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) came into practice, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has said it will marginally hike prices of its smartphones available online.

Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the launch of Honor 8 Pro smartphone, Allen Wang, Director, Product Center, Huawei India Consumer Business Group, said: "We have both online and offline businesses in India. In online, there will be a little cost increase for sure. But offline, there will be no impact."

Without mentioning when the price hike will be implemented, Wang, however, added that the company plans to optimise other price-guiding factors to minimise the impact of the additional tax burden on its consumers in the country.
"So far, for all our products, we have not increased any price. Price is not just dependent on one factor. When the business gets better and the volume becomes bigger, we may also save some cost," Wang told IANS.
Terming GST as a good move, Wang hoped it will have a long-lasting positive effect on the Indian economy.
"I think this policy [GST] is good for the country in the long term. And when the economy will become better, our business will become better," he noted.

Going forward, Huawei is set to bring more flagship products in India later this year.
"We have already had several small and big launches this year like Honor 6X and Honor 8 Lite. We promise that we have some new devices, new models coming in the second half of the year," Wang informed.
Huawei recently launched 17 new exclusive service centres across the country.

"The after-sales service is very important and a big concern for consumers. That's why we launched 17 exclusive service centres in almost all metro cities. Together, we have more than 200 multi-brand service centres in the country. It's like a long-term commitment to the market," the top Huawei executive said,
"For us, the Indian market is always important. No brand can ignore it." Wang said.

20 New WhatsApp Features Introduced and Discoverd in 2017

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world, used by over 1.2 billion people worldwide and 200 million in India alone. Despite its success, the Facebook-owned company has not become complacent and always keeps the competition on its toes by releasing new features every few weeks. 2017, of course, saw the overhauled WhatsApp Status (an aping of Snapchat), but there have been many other small updates this year that didn't get as much attention.  From increased media sharing limit to video streaming, we take a look at all the new WhatsApp features released this year alone. While going down this memory lane, we’ve ranked features in the order that we feel made the most impact (or will make, if in beta) in user experience.

1. New revamped Snapchat-like Status feature

Perhaps, one of the most important updates this year, the new Status feature was rolled out to all users globally in February. The new WhatsApp Status feature replaced the old text form of status to allow users to change their status to a short video or multiple photos that will automatically disappear in 24 hours. Even though this feature was clearly introduced to combat Snapchat competition, it overhauled the way users interacted on the app daily.

2. Media sharing limit increased to 30

This change is significant because WhatsApp is one of the primary platforms for media sharing after an event, get-together, or any social meeting where pictures and videos are taken. The media limit was first at 10, and this increase to 30 was a welcome change by all users. It was first spotted in Android beta in January, but was later rolled out on all platforms eventually.

3. Recall or Revoke feature

This feature is still not out in the stable version, but has been spotted on various occasions. It’s important on a chat app because it lets you recall sent messages. The feature in the many possible forms it could arrive would allow users to recall or 'unsend' messages they have been sent to their contacts, or even edit them. The feature, was earlier seen on iPhone beta version, and was also spotted recently on WhatsApp Web as well.

4. Easy Two-step verification

This feature was rolled out in February to all users as an optional security feature. With this feature, users are now able to verify their number when they install the app on a new device more securely. Users will have to provide a six-digit passcode (created by them using this feature) when registering their phone number with WhatsApp again - or any attempt to verify their phone number through the app. To know how to setup two-step verification, follow the step-by-step guide here.

5.Can transfer all types of file

The company is slowly rolling out support for all types of file transfers (including archives) on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone with a limited number of users, removing any hindrance of file sharing on WhatsApp. This new feature will now allow you to share video in a wide variety of formats, MP3 songs, or even APK files for that matter on WhatsApp. The file sharing limit will still be at 128MB on iOS, 64MB on Web, and 100MB on Android.

6. Ability to queue messages on iPhone's

While WhatsApp had this ability on Android for a while now, iPhone users finally got it in January. This ability to queue messages even when in areas of poor or no connectivity was a big miss for iPhone users, as it prevented them to send messages at all in areas of poor connectivity. Now, all users can just send a WhatsApp message to a group/individual even when connectivity is unavailable, and the message will be sent automatically once they get connectivity again.

7. Reincarnation of Text Status features

After the introduction of the new Status feature, support for the old Text Status feature was ended. This created a huge uproar among users, and the feature was then brought back on popular demand. The feature is now available for iPhone and Android users both.

8. Photo Bundling, Video Streaming, Photo Filter features

WhatsApp introduced some nifty features to elevate media sharing. This includes photo bundling into an album, video streaming, and photo filters. The Photo Bundling feature allows users to send photos and videos to your contacts as an album. WhatsApp users can now send a bunch of photos to their friends, who will receive them bundled as an album and not as before, one after another. Once the album is opened, all images are shown on a single page. The feature is already available for iPhone users and is in beta for Android users.

The video streaming feature was first spotted in Android beta, but was rolled out in the stable version to iPhone users first. This feature allows its users to watch shared videos while they're being downloaded in the background. It will use your Wi-Fi or cellular data to buffer a shared video, while it's still in the downloading process in the background. Earlier, WhatsApp users had to wait until a video gets completely downloaded to watch it - depending upon WhatsApp auto-download setting.

Recently, WhatsApp also added the ability to add colour filters to the media that you send in chats for iPhone users. Head to WhatsApp, go to the individual or group chat that you want to send the media to, capture or select a photo, video, or GIF, and swipe up. Swiping up will pull out five photo filters that you can choose from. These are Pop, B&W, Cool, Film, and Chrome, but we expect WhatsApp to add more in the future.

9. Night Mode, Quick Reply button, and ability for Siri to read messages out loud

For iPhone users, WhatsApp recently introduced a new night mode feature for its camera for low-light photography. Interestingly, the Night Mode icon appears by default only when the camera sensor detects low-light conditions, and not otherwise.
In April, WhatsApp also gave more abilities to Siri. Four key highlights include - you can ask Siri to read out your latest messages; visual improvements to the Calls tab, Contact info, and Group info screens; ability to select multiple statuses at once in the My Updates screen which you can forward and delete; and support for Persian language.
Another iPhone-only feature was the Quick Reply feature that allowed users to reply to an individual just by swiping right on a specific text in chats. This reply shortcut is particularly useful in group chats where you speak to multiple users at once.

10. Chat improvements

To improve the basic handling of chat and the way you communicate with the screen while chatting, WhatsApp has made several tweaks this year. Most notable is that Android users got a new separate video call button and saw the relocation of the attachment button. Earlier, the video calling feature was hidden within or grouped with the voice calling button, and one would need to tap twice in order to choose video calling from a pop-up menu. The attachment button was relocated to the bottom within the text bar. You'll now see the little attachment feature right next to the camera icon in the text bar. Notably, the text bar too got a new look with rounded corners rather than the square-shaped box of old.

With the new Pinned Chats feature introduced in May for Android users, WhatsApp allowed pinning of up to three contacts on top of rest of the conversations. WhatsApp is also testing a new feature that lets you send multiple contacts at once. Earlier, users were limited to send just one contact at a time, but now that limit has been revoked. This feature was spotted on Android beta, and should roll out for everyone soon.
Spotted in Android beta was also emoji search that brings the ability to search for emojis based on keywords. This nifty feature was first possible through third-party apps, but now the ability is coming to the in-app keyboard as well. There were also new font shortcuts spotted in beta for bold, italics, and strike through. This would remove the need to add text inside asterisks while typing for making it bold, or type phrase between underscores to italicise.

11. Number Changing  Capability and Live Location feature

Lastly but importantly, WhatsApp was recently reported to be testing a new feature on the Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile platform that could make life less painful when changing your contact number. In trying to ease the transition, it is testing a feature that will notify your friends and family about your number change for you. The Live Location sharing feature was also spotted on Android beta, hinting that it will make its way to WhatsApp soon. This will presumably turn location sharing on as a broadcast - enabling contacts to see each other on a map.
