Juan Williams say's: Trump's war on media is truly dangerous | SoTechNaija

Trump says journalists make him 'more uncivil' than he actually is; reaction from Howard Kurtz, Fox News media analyst and host of 'MediaBuzz.'
Editor's note: This first appeared in The Hill.

Okay, you are covering the White House. What do you do when a retired four-star general who is now White House Chief of Staff tells lies in an on-the-record briefing?

You stick to the facts, and let readers and viewers realize the alarming dereliction of public trust from a high government official.

Then comes a response from Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary.

"If you want to go after General [John] Kelly that's up to you, but I think that if you want to get into a debate with a four-star Marine general, I think that's something highly inappropriate," Sanders said.

Let’s review this effort to normalize lying by a White House official.

In a democracy — government by the people and for the people — it is now “highly inappropriate” to tell the truth about a Chief of Staff who tells confirmed falsehoods?

That appears to be President Trump’s opinion. He said in the Oval Office this month that it was “frankly disgusting” that the press is “able to write whatever they want to write.”

Clearly the president has an authoritarian bent when it comes to journalism. His latest comments fit with past labeling of straight news reporters as “dishonest,” “scum” and the “enemy of the American people.”

“I hate some of these people, I hate 'em,” Trump said about reporters at a Michigan rally late last year, a month after he won the presidency. “I would never kill them. I would never do that.”

He then paused smiled and joked, “No, I wouldn't. I would never kill 'em.”

But he did direct tirades at straight news reporters covering his campaign and have his supporters turn to curse and threaten them at rallies.

And Trump did ask his Twitter followers: “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for the country.”

A corrupt President Nixon expressed similar thoughts about going after television stations owned by The Washington Post during the paper’s probe into the Watergate scandal.

Trump’s appetite for shutting down the free press is a reminder of his open admiration for strong men dictators like Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Turkey’s Recep Erdogan and the Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte. Those strongmen limit the freedom of the press and, in some cases, kill and jail journalists.

Earlier this year, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., responded to Trump calling the press the “enemy” of the American people by saying that is “how dictators get started.”

Trump, like those dictators, wants to control what the public knows. His goal is to shape reality in order to manufacture public approval of his leadership — which is at an all-time low for a president during his first year.

And as brazen as that strategy is in a country with constitutional protections for freedom of the press, the bigger shock is that it is having some success.

This is especially true among Republicans.

A Vanity Fair/60 Minutes poll from April found 36 percent of Republicans say they believe freedom of the press “does more harm than good.”

Recently, the president called attention to a Politico/Morning Consult poll that found 46 percent of Americans believe the media “fabricates stories” to damage him and his administration. In the same poll, 37 percent said the media does not fabricate and 17 percent said they didn’t know.

Trump’s desire to make the American news media into his version of Pravda — the Russian government’s propaganda sheet — is being criticized even by some on the right.

“This isn’t a game. It isn’t just Trump being Trump. It is a new front in his endless attack on a central pillar of our liberties — a free press,” GOP strategist Rick Wilson, a longtime critic of the president, wrote recently in the Daily Beast.

Bernie Goldberg, a Fox News commentator, wrote this rebuke on his website:

“As with so many things, this president is just plain wrong. Journalists have biases; they make mistakes; sometimes they’re sloppy; and worst of all, sometimes they have a political agenda. But fabricating stories that they know are not true, inventing fake news sources: that is so rare as to be virtually nonexistent.”

Bret Baier, the Fox News anchor and my colleague, said last week that Trump’s criticism of the press is now “way over the top.”

Another colleague, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, said in a separate interview he dislikes media personalities who join Trump in “bashing the media, because oftentimes what they are bashing is stuff that we on the news side are doing.”

As a journalist, I have been critical of President Trump. That has led to Twitter taunting against me by Trump. And then there are the countless racist and hateful comments posted to my social media pages by self-described Trump supporters.

When National Public Radio (NPR) fired me in 2010 for speaking my mind about fear of Muslim terrorism, principled conservatives — even those who disliked me — rose to my defense and called NPR out for their censorship and thug tactics to stifle free speech.

When the Obama administration’s press shop waged a campaign to delegitimize Fox News by excluding it from a White House pool interview in 2009, journalists — even those who didn’t like Fox — stood up and said that was wrong.

If people were outraged by what NPR did to me and what the Obama White House did to Fox, then their principles must dictate that they are similarly outraged by Trump’s treatment of the press.

Recall what President Jefferson wrote in his famous letter to Edward Carrington:

“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

How far we’ve come from Jefferson’s wisdom to Trump’s ugly, ignorant threats.

Fake News, indeed.

What are the top fancy dress trends for Halloween 2017?

Director of company Angels Fancy Dress, Emma Angel, said to the Sun Online: “Brits tend to approach fancy dress with a sense of humour.
"But they’re also not afraid to embrace the traditional horror of Halloween so, year-on-year, we are seeing costumes become increasingly diverse and innovative.
"Popular culture is usually the biggest influence upon Halloween trends each year, with customers taking lead from global events, viral news stories, and mainstream films and TV series.”
Here is Angels Fancy Dress' top predictions for trends this year...

Stranger Things

Stranger Things inspired many Halloween costumes last year (with Eleven proving to be a particularly popular character) and with the new season out it's sure to be a hit this year too.

Last year’s Killer Clown caused something of a furore in 2016, and with the popularity of this year’s blockbuster movie It, a remake of the classic 1990 horror film, we’re expecting clown costumes to feature prominently again this Halloween.
It’s the 60th anniversary of Hammer Horror this year so expect to see a lot of iconic horror characters prowling the streets on October 31.

Comic Book characters (e.g. Wonder Woman / Harley Quinn)

The box office success of Wonder Woman this year has seen a resurgence in popularity of this classic comic book heroine, and we’re expecting many to be dressing up as Gal Gadot’s modern take on the superhero.
Another comic book character set to make a reappearance is Harley Quinn.
As the character’s popularity continues, we’re expecting many partygoers to opt for this costume again.

Emojis and snapchat filters

Technology is a dominant part of our lives, and it seems emoji culture has crossed over into the real world again this Halloween.
We’ve definitely seen an increase in the amount of emoji-inspired costumes being purchased for themed parties, and we’re also expecting snapchat filters to inspire costumes this year.
This is a fun one as there are a plethora to choose from, and it allows people to be creative with their interpretation.

Hustler founder Larry Flynt offers $10 million for dirt leading to Trump's impeachment | SoTechNaija

Hustler founder Larry Flynt is running a full-page ad in Sunday’s Washington Post offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the impeachment of President Trump, Fox Business reports.

Anchor Liz Claman tweeted a photo of the ad, which reads: “Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine announce a cash offer of up to $10 million for information leading to the impeachment and removal from office of Donald J. Trump.”
In the ad, Flynt airs several grievances about Trump’s actions as president, including his firing of FBI director James Comey and his “gross nepotism and appointment of unqualified persons to high office.”
“Impeachment would be a messy, contentious affair, but the alternative – three more years of destabilizing dysfunction – is worse,” the ad reads. “Both good Democrats and good Republicans who put country over party did it before with Watergate. To succeed, impeachment requires unimpeachable evidence. That’s why I am making this offer.”

The porn producer notes in the ad that this “is not my first rodeo,” citing past rewards for information on Republicans like former Rep. Bob Livingston in 1999, who resigned from Congress after admitting to an extramarital affair, and Sen. David Vitter, who weathered a prostitution scandal in 2007.
“Sure I could use that $10 million to buy luxuries or further my businesses,” Flynt writes, “but what good would that do me in a world devastated by the most powerful moron in history?”

Why Facebook User should Downlaod Massenger Lite instead of messenger | SoTechNaija

Statistically speaking, there’s a pretty good chance you’re one of the 1.2 billion people who use Facebook Messenger at least once a month. Anecdotally, there’s a decent chance you harbor deep resentments toward its sluggishness, its bloat, and its liberally borrowed Snapchat features. Friends, there’s a better way. It’s called Messenger Lite.

You may have heard of Messenger Lite already, and if you live outside of the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland, you may already be using it. Facebook first launched Lite a year ago, intending it for markets whose fickle or low-bandwidth internet connections would collapse under the weight of the full-fledged Messenger platform. This week, Lite launched for those four more developed markets as well. And guess what? You should switch over to it immediately.

That directive comes with a couple of caveats: If you have an iPhone, this does not apply to you. Sorry! Facebook only released Messenger Lite on Android, with no signs of an iOS version in the offing. Secondly, if you are for some reason heavily invested in the Facebook Messenger games ecosystem, which I know must exist because there is a game controller tab in the Messenger app every time I open it, you should stick with the full-fledged version. Also, Lite doesn't support Secret Conversations, Facebook's end-to-end encrypted chat, but hey, that's what Signal's for anyway.
And that’s it! Everyone else: Let’s explore why Lite is absolutely right for you.

Lite As a Feather

It’s easier to focus on what Lite does have than what it doesn’t, because the list is so short. When you open Lite up, you get three gloriously straightforward tabs: Home, which shows your existing chats. Contacts, which, you know, and Profile, where you can adjust your notification settings, look at your message requests, switch accounts, report any issues, and that’s pretty much it.
No, really, that’s all! There’s no funhouse mirror room of tabs within tabs like you find in Messenger, in which opening the app presents you with, by my count, 10 tappable options (not including your recent conversations): Home, Contacts, Camera, Games, and Bots tabs, a Compose bubble, a Profile icon, and the option to sort chats by Messages, Active, Groups, and Calls.
I got tired just counting those, much less navigating them. And it never stops. Open a composition window in Messenger and you get options for your camera, for images, for voice dictation, for emoji and GIFs and stickers. You can call or video chat. Press the "plus" sign and you can send money, or your location, or summon a Food Network branded extension for some ungodly reason. You can send a thumbs up. You can also, I’m fairly certain, still type actual words.

Some of those choices persist in Lite, but not nearly enough to cause paralysis. You can still send a sticker, but it doesn’t animate. You can still snap a photo or dictate or call. But Lite does not contain the intricate, endless tunnel system that Messenger employs to squeeze all of its features into one bitty app. You can’t get lost in Lite. You can, though, send and receive messages quickly and efficiently, which seems just about perfect for an app called Messenger.

As user experience goes, I’m not sure what else to tell you, other than that all of the puffery in and around Messages mostly exists to keep you staring at Messages rather than necessarily improving your life and mind. You only have so many engaged minutes to give in one lifetime. Don’t spend them lobbing ingredients at a Food Network bot.

Shoot the Messenger

Lite doesn’t just save you time because there’s less to fiddle with. It also spares you very real seconds—and frustration—by not sputtering under its own weight, as its fuller-featured counterpart most certainly can and does. It’s a greyhound next to a slobbering Messenger mastiff.

Slimming down has other, unseen benefits as well. Lite takes up less than 10MB on your phone—and nearly 10 times less space than Messenger. The side benefit of stripping down so many features is that you use far less data. And it won’t stress your battery as much.
If you’re a Messenger power user, well, frankly you haven’t read this far because you’ve already switched back to your Word With Friends game. But everyone else: Switch to Lite. You can still get in touch with anyone who has a Facebook account. You can still make free calls over Wi-Fi. You can still give a thumbs up. But you can do it all without feeling like you’ve been dropped inside a digital labyrinth, a social (media) experiment to see just how many times you can tap your screen without actually accomplishing anything.

Civilization may well have reached a point where contacting people over Facebook is an occasional necessity. But Messenger Lite at least means you can go ahead and get it over with.

Las Vegas Shooting: Live Updates | SoTechNaija

Right Now The authorities say the gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, is dead.
• More than 50 people died and 400 others were injured in a shooting at an outdoor concert near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, the police said. It was one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.
• The police said that officers found Mr. Paddock dead in his room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said he was believed to be the only assailant.
• Automatic gunfire can be heard in videos from the grounds of the concert, a country music event known as the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Concertgoers ran and ducked for cover, and thousands of people fled.

The police say the gunman is dead.

Sheriff Lombardo described Mr. Paddock as a “local resident,” but said that his background was largely a mystery and that his motive was unknown. He predicted “a long and tedious investigation.”
The police said that Mr. Paddock opened fire on the crowd from a hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on Sunday night. The Las Vegas Police Department SWAT team found him dead.
“As far as his history and background, we haven’t completed that part of the investigation yet,” Sheriff Lombardo said of the suspect. “But we located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied.”

“You could see people getting shot”

The gunfire began during a performance by the singer Jason Aldean, the closing act of the Route 91 Harvest Festival, according to Gail Davis, who was in the audience of more than 22,000.
The scene erupted into chaos as thousands of people began to panic. “Everyone was running,” she said. “You could see people getting shot.”
She said a police officer had guided her and her husband to safety as gunshots ricocheted around them. As they ran, Ms. Davis heard a voice on the officer’s radio say the words “active shooters.”
“I’ve never been that scared in my life,” she said. “To have this happen, I can’t wrap my mind around it.”
Ms. Davis said many children were attending the concert. Amid the confusion, she heard one woman scream, “I can’t find my daughter.”

One police officer has died.

The police said in a statement that one off-duty Las Vegas police officer was killed in the shooting. At a news conference earlier in the day, Sheriff Lombardo had said that two off-duty officers were killed.
The name of the deceased officer has not been released because his family has not been notified, the police said.
Two on-duty officers were injured in the shooting. One was in stable condition; the other had what the police described as “non-life-threatening wounds.”
Additionally, an off-duty officer from Bakersfield, Calif., who was attending the concert was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police locate gunman’s ‘companion.’

The police said they were “confident but not 100 percent sure” that they had located Marilou Danley, a woman they described as “a companion that is traveling with” Mr. Paddock.

The authorities have called her a “person of interest” and the shooter’s “roommate.” The police also said they had located two cars whose license plates were registered to Mr. Paddock.

Politicians offer thoughts and prayers.

President Trump responded to the shooting on Monday by tweeting his “warmest condolences” for the families of the victims.

Other lawmakers woke up to the news and offered thoughts and prayers. Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada called the shooting a “heinous act of violence.”
Senator James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, referred to the shooting as a “terror attack,” although as of 4:30 a.m. in Las Vegas, law enforcement officials had not identified a motive for the gunman.

The House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi of California, said she was “horrified and heartbroken” by the shooting.

Google celebrates 19th birthday with 19 games from Doodles past | SoTechNaija

Google’s latest Doodle for its 19th anniversary is a birthday surprise spinner that takes players back to its most memorable Doodle games. Spin the wheel to play interactive browser games from the past 19 years, like a musical puzzle game celebrating Beethoven’s 245th birthday, or this adorable Magic Cat Academy Halloween game from 2016.

Google
Google has also added a brand-new Snake game to its Search Funbox, which is one of the 19 wheel surprises among other search result games like tic-tac-toe, and an Earth Day quiz. You can play it anytime by searching “snake game,” or just search “Google birthday surprise spinner” to give the wheel a spin and try out the other Doodle games.
The wheel also includes the 2010 Pac Man browser game, which time management software company RescueTime famously alleged cost the economy $120 million and 4.8 million hours of lost productivity. For the sake of humoring more bad math, I’m going to go ahead and guesstimate that $120 million x 19 games means $2.3 billion of productivity will be lost today. Have fun!

Politics: Trump Humiliated Jeff Sessions After Mueller Appointment

President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the Oval Office in February.

According to a popular political news blog The New York Times reported that Shortly after learning in May that a special counsel had been appointed to investigate links between his campaign associates and Russia, President Trump berated Attorney General Jeff Sessions in an Oval Office meeting and said the attorney general should resign, according to current and former administration officials and others briefed on the matter.

The president blamed the appointment of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, on Mr. Sessions’s decision to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s Russia investigation — a move Mr. Trump believes was the moment his administration effectively lost control over the inquiry. Accusing Mr. Sessions of “disloyalty,” Mr. Trump unleashed a string of insults on his attorney general.
Ashen and emotional, Mr. Sessions told the president he would quit and sent a resignation letter to the White House, according to four people who were told details of the meeting. Mr. Sessions would later tell associates that the demeaning way the president addressed him was the most humiliating experience in decades of public life.

The Oval Office meeting, details of which have not previously been reported, shows the intensity of Mr. Trump’s emotions as the Russia investigation gained steam and how he appeared to immediately see Mr. Mueller’s appointment as a looming problem for his administration. It also illustrates the depth of antipathy Mr. Trump has had for Mr. Sessions — one of his earliest campaign supporters — and how the president interprets “disloyalty” within his circle of advisers.
Mr. Trump ended up rejecting Mr. Sessions’s May resignation letter after senior members of his administration argued that dismissing the attorney general would only create more problems for a president who had already fired an F.B.I. director and a national security adviser. Mr. Trump once again, in July, told aides he wanted to remove Mr. Sessions, but for a second time didn’t take action.

The relationship between the two men has improved marginally since midsummer, as Mr. Sessions has made a public display of hunting for the leakers among the administration’s national security officials. His allies said that despite the humiliation, the attorney general has stayed in the job because he sees a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity as the nation’s top law enforcement official to toughen the country’s immigration policies.

But he may be losing that battle as well. Mr. Sessions played a prominent role announcing the end of the Obama-era program that provided protection to the children of undocumented immigrants, only to see his boss backtrack on the policy. On Thursday morning, Mr. Trump confirmed he had reached a deal with Democrats to provide protections for the so-called “Dreamers.”

This account is based on interviews with seven administration officials and others familiar with the interactions between Mr. Trump and Mr. Sessions in recent months who requested anonymity because they are not permitted to speak publicly about confidential conversations between the president and his aides. Politico first reported in July that Mr. Sessions had once offered his resignation letter, but the circumstances that prompted the letter — and Mr. Trump’s dressing down of the attorney general — have not previously been reported.

Spokespeople for the White House and Justice Department declined to comment.
The president’s outburst came in the middle of an Oval Office meeting Mr. Trump had with top advisers on May 17, to discuss candidates to take over the F.B.I. after the president fired its director, James B. Comey, earlier that month. In addition to Mr. Sessions, Vice President Mike Pence, Donald F. McGahn III, the White House counsel, and several other aides attended the meeting.
In the middle of the meeting, Mr. McGahn received a phone call from Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general who had been overseeing the Russia investigation since Mr. Sessions recused himself from the inquiry months earlier. Mr. Sessions had stepped aside after it was revealed he had not provided accurate testimony to Congress about his meetings with the Russian ambassador during the presidential campaign.
In the telephone call to Mr. McGahn, Mr. Rosenstein said he had decided to appoint Mr. Mueller to be a special counsel for the investigation. Congress had been putting pressure on Mr. Rosenstein to appoint a special counsel to put distance between the Trump administration and the Russia investigation, and just the day before The New York Times had revealed that Mr. Trump had once asked Mr. Comey to end the F.B.I.’s investigation into Michael T. Flynn, the former national security adviser.
When the phone call ended, Mr. McGahn relayed the news to the president and his aides. Almost immediately, Mr. Trump lobbed a volley of insults at Mr. Sessions, telling the attorney general it was his fault they were in the current situation. Mr. Trump told Mr. Sessions that choosing him to be attorney general was one of the worst decisions he had made, called him an “idiot,” and said that he should resign.
An emotional Mr. Sessions told the president he would resign and left the Oval Office. That evening, as the Justice Department publicly announced the appointment of Mr. Mueller, the attorney general wrote a brief resignation letter to the president that was later sent to the White House. A person familiar with the events raised the possibility that Mr. Sessions had become emotional because the impact of his recusal was becoming clear.

In the hours after the Oval Office meeting, however, Mr. Trump’s top advisers intervened to save Mr. Sessions’s job. Mr. Pence, Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s chief strategist at the time, and Reince Priebus, his chief of staff, all advised that accepting Mr. Sessions’s resignation would only sow more chaos inside the administration and rally Republicans in Congress against the president. Mr. Sessions, a former Alabama senator, served in the Senate for two decades.
The president relented, and eventually returned the resignation letter to Mr. Sessions — with a handwritten response on it.

For Mr. Sessions, the aggressiveness with which Mr. Trump has sought his removal was a blow. The son of a general store owner in a small town in Alabama, Mr. Sessions had long wanted to be the nation’s top federal law enforcement official or to serve in another top law enforcement or judicial post. He earned a reputation in the Senate as someone tough on immigration, and was the first senator to back Mr. Trump in the presidential campaign.
But their relationship began to deteriorate little more than a month after Mr. Trump was sworn in as president, after Mr. Sessions’s announcement that he was recusing himself from the Russia inquiry caught Mr. Trump by surprise.

The president spent months stewing about the recusal. In a July 19 interview with The Times, Mr. Trump said he never would have appointed Mr. Sessions to be attorney general if he knew he was going to recuse himself from the Russia investigation. Mr. Trump called the decision “very unfair to the president.”
Days after the Times interview, Mr. Trump told aides he wanted to replace Mr. Sessions. Some of the president’s aides, not sure if Mr. Trump really wanted the attorney general gone or was just working through his anger, were able to delay the firing until the president’s anger passed.

But Mr. Trump continued his public attacks in the days that followed, including taking to Twitter to call him “weak” — a word that is among the harshest criticisms in Mr. Trump’s arsenal.
Administration officials and some of Mr. Trump’s outside advisers have puzzled at Mr. Sessions’s decision to stay on. But people close to Mr. Sessions said that he did not leave because he had a chance to have an impact on what he sees as an issue of his career: curtailing legal and illegal immigration.
In recent weeks, he has spearheaded the effort to undo what he believed to be the Obama administration’s dangerously lenient immigration policies, including the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals program.

Mr. Sessions had no illusions about converting Mr. Trump to his side of the argument — Mr. Trump remains deeply ambivalent — and he had no illusions about repairing a damaged relationship he had once regarded as a friendship. But he told people he felt he had successfully pushed the president toward ending the Obama immigration policy, and thought it had given him increased leverage in the West Wing.

The president agreed to terminate the program, and on Sept. 5 Mr. Sessions stood alone at a lectern — a moment that seemed to be a significant victory for the attorney general.

But his satisfaction was fleeting. Mr. Trump quickly undercut Mr. Sessions in a tweet by saying he would reconsider whether or not to end the program, leading the attorney general to tell allies that he was frustrated that the president had muddled months of work leading to the announcement of the new policy.

On Wednesday evening, Democrats announced they had reached a deal with the president to quickly extend protections for young undocumented immigrants.
On Thursday morning, taking a vastly different position than the one Mr. Sessions had announced on Sept. 5, the president tweeted about the need for protections for people brought here “through no fault of their own.”

This Woman Holds the Guinness World Record for Longest Eyelashes

When you think of beauty-related Guinness World Records, those unbelievably long, curly fingernails probably come to mind. But forget everything you thought you knew: The actual wildest body-part-related record definitely goes to the world's longest eyelashes. They're almost 5 inches long and took their owner nearly 50 years to grow. NBD.According to the Guinness World Records, You Jianxia of Shanghai, who was born in 1968, has a lash on her left upper eyelid that measures a whopping 12.4 centimeters (about 4.88 inches). And since the record was actually set on June 28, 2016, it's possible that Jianxia's eyelashes have grown even longer in the past 14 months. Do they grow that fast, though? Does she trim them? Has she considered shampooing them? Do they get split ends? Do they tickle her face? Has she ever tried Latisse? I NEED answers.

All the Guinness World Records publishers shared about Jianxia in a press release promoting the 2018 edition, which includes Jianxia's record, is that she discovered the scarily long lash "during an 18-month nature retreat she embarked on in 2013." According to the publishers, "She puts the growth down to the life she leads at one with nature." BRB, scheduling a camping trip to grow out my lashes.

Jianxia will be in good company in the Guinness World Records 2018 book, which hit shelves last week, according to the release. One particular addition includes a shockingly long set of fingernails. The latest record was set by Houston-based nail artist Ayanna Williams, 60, who grew out her nails for 23 years until they reached their current length of almost 19 feet. In case you were wondering, they can take almost an entire week to paint and make putting on pants extra difficult. And if you're interested in giving Williams a run for her money, her strategy for growing out her nails includes cleaning them daily with antibacterial soap and avoiding washing the dishes (I'm sold!).

Jamb Sets To Announce New Policies Today Being Tuesday

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, which began a meeting on Monday, is expected to formally announce a new holistic policy Today, when the body is expected to conclude its ongoing deliberation.
The meeting, which involves admission officers of Nigerian tertiary institutions, is taking place at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.

Issues discussed at the meeting include the introduction of Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) to ensure quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.
An attendee at Monday’s meeting explained that the new policy is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.'
These institutions will write to JAMB to request for the students and also give them (students) three days to respond. Also, only three universities can request for a candidate if the policy is adopted.
The new policy is also expected to allow institutions in Nigeria peg their cut off point after meeting with their respective senates.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the new policy will also give the academic board or senate of an institution the power to ‘allocate percentages to JAMB, the school and O’level results as these will be calculated to get the students’ cut off marks for post-UTME.’
It was also learnt that JAMB wants to ensure there is a unified time for closing admission in all universities.

If the policy sails through, there will be a portal for admission which will be based on cut off points, quota system and catchment areas.
“The new system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points,” an admission officer for a tertiary institution who was at the meeting told PREMIUM TIMRS. “If a candidate does not meet the cut off, no matter whom he or she knows, such person cannot be admitted.”
The official said the system was demonstrated to all the attendees at Monday’s meeting, most of whom expressed satisfaction with it.

Also, the policy intends to make provisions for candidates to accept and reject any admission being offered to them.
The intended policy also looks out for candidates who are unable to go for National Youth Service, NYSC, because they do not have JAMB admission letters. This set of students could be asked to pay a fee, about N10,000 for regularisation and would be able to go for the youth service.
JAMB is expected to formally brief journalists on these new policies Today afternoon

Why The Crab Has No Head And How The first River Started: Episode 1

A long time ago, when God made this earth, he choose the mighty elephant to be king of the world. The elephant and his subjects roamed through the dark green forest, and since there were no rivers in those days, God made a pond for them to drink from.

Now one day, the elephant trumpeted loudly, and called for his friends; the hawk and the crab."Tomorrow",  he announced, 'I am going for hunting in the forest, and you must come with me.'
The hawk was overjoyed and flew away to get his bow and arrows, but the poor crab was a slow-moving creature and could not hold any hunting weapons. But he was determined not to be left out, so he crawled and began to think hard about the problem.

The next morning all three creatures meet on the edge of the forest and while the hawk and elephant went out with their bows and arrows to a section of the forest where they knew they will find plenty of games, the crab dragged a long net behind him, set it up on a spot he had chosen, and waited.
Presently, a wounded animal rushed away from the elephant and the hawk, straight into the crabs net and seizing a large piece of wood, the crab quickly beat the animal at its head so that it dies at ones.
This happened again and again. If the elephant or the hawk killed animal outright, then they put it beside them for themselves, but if they only wounded one, the poor creature rushed away towards the crabs net. Once it was entangled there, the crab soon dispatched it with his heavy stick, removed and hid the arrow that it had wounded it, and put the carcass on his own pile.
By the afternoon, the elephant had killed five antelope and the hawk three, and each taught he had done very well.
'Lets go and find the crab,' suggested the elephant. 'I don't suppose the poor thing has managed to catch any thing t all'
How amazed they were to find the crab sitting proudly beside the carcasses of ten animals, all much bigger than himself. The hawk began congratulating him but the elephant was furious that the crab had killed more animals than he had, and shouted:
'Hawk!   kill the wretched crab.   I, your king, order you to do so. Cut of his head at once!
'Oh, sir! Oh, king!' begged the crab. 'Please do not kill me. I will give you all this meat and never come near you again if only you will let me live.'
At last the elephant consented and seizing the..

Justin Bieber: Exposed Trying to Pick Up Gym Employee Through Instagram DMs

Justin Bieber Gets Exposed Trying to Pick Up Gym Employee Through Instagram DMs

Justin Bieber tried to slide into a gym's DMs to pick up one of its employees, and his thirst got exposed to all of social media.

If you're a rich and famous star, you should get one thing straight: your DMs are not going to remain private for long. The ease of screenshotting has turned every conversation into fodder for social media, so you better get used to hiding your thirst.

Unless your name is Justin Bieber, I guess. The Biebs is still waltzing through DMs with no fear, and this time he found a rather obscure target to set his sights on.
Jessica Gober, a 22-year-old employee at Fitness on Broughton in Savannah, Georgia, has been tasked with increasing the social media presence for her employer. That directive led to this boomerang, with Gober modeling an energy drink for the page:

At the time, the gym only had 73 followers on Instagram, but somehow, someway, the page attracted a very famous follower with the post. After spotting Gober on their page, Biebs did what any fired up young man does when a thirst trap is thrown in front of them: he fell right into it, reaching out through the generic gym page to holler at Gober. She documented the exchange on her Twitter page, sharing the receipts of Bieber's interest.

I'm all for shooting your shot, but I have a lot of questions about how/why Bieber was trolling through a page for a Savannah gym with minimal social media presence. Best believe that if this was any old person off the street thirsting after random gym employees, they'd get hit with the "creepy" tag and shunned by the public.
In any case, the reactions were mixed to Bieber's attempt to get with Gober. The Bieber hive was out in full force, shaming her for sharing the exchange or condemning her for not trying to finesse some cash out of the superstar.

But outside of the Bieber fanatics, Gober has plenty of supporters, and you knew people were going to come out and roast the Biebs for this one.
And bless little Bieber's thirsty-ass heart, because he inspired a wave of copycats with his DM slide heard 'round the world. Fans of Bieber's decided they'd join in on the fun, mocking the DM to Gober in messages sent to him personally.
Though the pile-on will continue, Gober has actually stuck up for Bieber in interviews conducted since the DMs went viral. She insisted Bieber never went over the line, and says the gym actually reached back out to him at some point over the last few days.
"We didn't think Justin Bieber was being creepy, the gym did respond to him on Instagram," Gober told Buzzfeed. "I don't think he had any inappropriate intentions by simply asking who I was."
And hey, the gym now has over 1600 followers on Instagram, so Bieber indirectly helped them get the publicity they were searching for. No harm, no foul.
