BREAKING NEWS: ASUU Officially Calls Off Strike, Orders Lecturers To Resume On Tuesday | SoTechNaija

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has officially announced a conditional suspension of its over 5-week old nationwide strike.
The President of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, announced the suspension while addressing a news conference at about 9.30 pm on Monday night after another round of meeting with the government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige in Abuja.
The union also directed its members to return to the classroom with immediate effect – tomorrow, Tuesday.

The ASUU President said it was suspending the strike till end of October for government to fulfill its pledges.

He said that the union will not hesitate to resume the suspended action if the government renege on the signed agreement which he called Memorandum of Action, adding that the signed agreement was backed by a definite timeline for implementation.

He warned that the government must not deliberately dishonor the agreement, pointing out that the continuous breach of signed agreement has been responsible for the constant strike action in the Universities.
Ogunyemi said that the current agreement with the government is based on mutual trust between the union and the government, adding that the trust of the union must be respected by the government.

It is understood that the meeting, which started about 4.00pm was supposed to last for about one hour, but dragged for about four hours before agreement was reached on all contending issues.

Top 10 Tips For Law Students

Top 10 Tips For Law Students And Future Personal Injury Lawyers

Get inspired by Steve Gursten, with this post of which to future personal Injury lawyers.
There is so much to know when starting out as a personal injury lawyer. How do I get a foot in the door? How can I prove myself? Where do I get my first job as a lawyer?
Where do I begin?
I’m Steve Gursten, a partner of Michigan Auto Law. Our law firm has been specializing in helping people injured in auto accidents for more than 50 years. But I remember the anxiety of looking for my first job. I know it’s not easy. There are some things I wish I would have known as a new lawyer. That’s why I’ve composed this list of 10 tips for law students.
  1. The law of supply and demand applies to the practice of law too.
  2. Don’t lose the common touch.
  3. Try to find the humor in things when they go wrong.
  4. Create a personal filing system for your professional development reading.
  5. Attend seminars.
  6. Develop your own support network.
  7. Know the real truth about mentors.
  8. Think about marketing and management.
  9. Keep connected.
  10. What others think about you is far less important than what you think of yourself.

1. The law of supply and demand applies to the practice of law too.

Today, the supply of lawyers is greater than the demand. That’s bad news for law students looking for jobs and bad news for lawyers looking to make partner one day.
To be successful, you will have to differentiate yourself from everyone else. There are lots of lawyers. And there are lots of lawyers willing to put in long hours and work very hard. This is not enough to cut it.
But there are not a lot of lawyers out there who know how to try a case. Even at the top law firms, there are so-called top litigators – lawyers who have arbitrated 500 cases, yet haven’t tried a case in 20 years. If you want to truly differentiate yourself, learn how to be a real trial lawyer. Try cases.

2. Don’t lose the common touch.

Law students often forget how to talk and write like normal human beings. Your juries are normal people, not law school professors grading moot court competitions. The average juror has a fifth grade education level. So don’t talk like a lawyer. Don’t use big words when you can use small words. Avoid complicated sentences.
Jurors, like all people, tend to favor people they like and people who they feel are like them.

3. Try to find the humor in things when they go wrong.

They will. There’s an old saying that you are not a real trial lawyer until win a case you should have lost, and you lose a case you should have won.
Especially considering the legal landscape today, you can have a just case, a deserving client, soundly beat your opposing counsel in every phase of trial, and still lose at trial. You can spend days preparing for an important motion, get to court and find its obvious the judge hasn’t even read it.
This is real life and real life isn’t always fair. If you can’t laugh about it, you’ll do a lot of crying.

4. Create a personal filing system and do professional development reading.

Dedicate a half hour to an hour a day, at least a few mornings or evenings a week, to professional development reading.
If you want to become a great trial lawyer, there is a wealth of incredible information for you to choose from. You can learn about the fundamentals of trying a case and specific issues you will face one day. You can read what has been written by some of the greatest trial lawyers ever. This wisdom is just sitting on the shelves of your law school library.

As you read, create a personal filing system. If you read something – for example, a great opening statement, or a compelling analogy, something that you can visualize yourself saying one day – then copy it and put it in your folder on opening statements.
Doing this will put you far ahead of your peers, and help immensely when you are preparing for trial.

5. Attend seminars.

Want to learn more about being a trial lawyer in one week then you can in three years of law school? Join the American Association for Justice (AAJ) as a law student and you get to go to the summer convention for free. For five days, you can learn cutting-edge techniques on trial advocacy and persuasion from some of the best trial lawyers and jury consultants in the country.

There are introductory programs specifically for law students and new lawyers, where you can learn about taking and defending depositions, your first trial, and more.
It is fantastic learning opportunity. And did I mention it’s free?

6. Develop your own support network.

Join the e-mail list serves and legal forums that now exist for nearly every area of law. Create online relationships with lawyers throughout the country. These lawyers face the same issues you face, and can share motions, ideas, and strategies that can save you hundreds of hours of work.
I belong to several trial lawyer list serves. There are dedicated forums for lawyers who handle car accidents, truck accidents, traumatic brain injuries, as well as personal injury law in every state.

I also have a group of doctors and lawyers from around the country and together we form a fantastic support network, constantly e-mailing each other articles and ideas.
There are fantastic resources out there that lawyers even 10 years ago could never have imagined. Find them, join them and above all, participate. It will give you tremendous competitive advantages.

7. Know the real truth about mentors.

Everyone says law school students should have a mentor. The problem is, many lawyers are probably not well-suited to become mentors, and you might want to think twice before learning from them and copying their habits.
Some of the best mentors are waiting to help you – they can be found in your law library. In other words, you can learn from some of the best lawyers that ever lived on tapes, CDs, DVDs, and countless books.

If you do seek out a mentor, make sure he or she is the one of the best in the field. This can be verified by a solid trial record, leadership positions in legal associations, speaking engagements and a strong reputation in the community.

8. Think about marketing and management.

You can be the best lawyer in the world, but if no one knows who you are and what you do, it won’t matter. There are a lot of amazing lawyers waiting everyday for phones to ring. That’s why every lawyer should think about marketing, everyday.
My law school didn’t offer classes on marketing, management, accounting, and the other real-life things that many of us ex-political science majors who then went to law school are one day going to need.

If your law school offers classes in these areas, count yourself as lucky and take them. If not, read and teach yourself about marketing and management. It’s rare to find lawyers who are both technically skilled and who are also good business people.
Yes, law is a profession, not a business. But if you can’t balance your books or bring in new clients, it really doesn’t matter how true to the ideals of the legal profession you are.

9. Keep connected.

Lawyers have some of the highest rates of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, suicide, divorce, and depression. If you’re reading this now, it’s probably too late. You blew it. You went to law school. Okay, gallows humor.

But try to remember to be human, and try to spend time with the people you love. That includes spending some time on yourself. Find something you are really passionate about that has nothing to do with law and carve out time to pursue it. It will help keep you from burning out.

10. What others think about you is far less important than what you think of yourself.

If you are really lucky, and I mean really lucky, you will learn this early on in your legal career. Trust me, the law firms that everyone talks about in law school will not be that important years from now. Think about the first girl or boy that you ever dated. Years later you just have to shake your head and laugh because the things that were so important to you then seem silly and preposterous.
If you can keep yourself from thinking how important it is to be at THE FIRM, and instead find a job that’s interesting, rewarding and fulfilling, then you are one of the lucky ones.

Final Thought from Michigan Auto Law

For me, a satisfying career is practicing as a personal injury lawyer and helping people who are seriously hurt through no fault of their own. Read here for tips on whether being a personal injury lawyer is right for you.
Meanwhile, if you follow the tips mentioned above, you will be able to flourish in the area of law that is right for you.

Michigan Auto Law is the largest law firm in the state specializing in car accidents, truck accidents and motorcycle accidents for more than 50 years and three generations. Call (888) 995-8441 if you’re interested in our mentoring program, or if you or a loved one has been in a car accident.

Get A Mesothelioma Lawyer To win any court case

Choosing a good mesothelioma lawyer is imperative to ensuring that you will be awarded the highest amount of compensation for your case.
Attorneys who specialize in asbestos litigation have experience with and knowledge about the complex issues, medical considerations, and history surrounding asbestos legislation, case law, and the applicable procedural rules and formalities of each and every case they handle.

The Cost for a Mesothelioma Attorney

Some people may shy away from the idea of a lawsuit, believing that it will be costly. When diagnosed with a deadly disease like mesothelioma, the prospect of paying for a lawyer on top of medical treatments and other expenses can seem overwhelming.
With asbestos-related personal injury and wrongful death claims, attorneys generally work on a contingency basis, which means that mesothelioma victims and their families will not have to pay anything up front and are only responsible for legal fees if their lawyer is able to help them receive compensation.
If an asbestos lawyer requires that you pay up front for his/her services, you should turn him/her down immediately and seek out a reputable law firm that will never make you pay before helping you receive a settlement or jury award.
How a Mesothelioma Lawyer Can Help You Having a good lawyer with experience in asbestos law can help you in a number of ways.

Lawsuit

If your asbestos exposure occurred on the job or due to a product that contained asbestos in your home, it may be possible to sue the company responsible for the exposure. A lawyer experienced in mesothelioma cases can explain the situations where a lawsuit may be likely to result in a settlement, a successful trial, or if you qualify for a class action lawsuit.

Compensation

If you or one of your family members suffer from mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease or condition, you may be entitled to receive compensation due to pain and suffering, lost wages, and medical expenses. Your attorney can explain the types of compensation available including receiving money from settlements and/or asbestos trust funds.

Claims

Whether filing a complaint in a court or submitting a claim to an asbestos trust fund, a mesothelioma attorney can help you make sure your claims are properly prepared, processed, and ultimately, paid.

Apply For Free Schoolarship To study In The UK

Offer Of Study

Applicants for International Office scholarships must first have applied for and obtained an offer of study at Nottingham for September or October 2017. Information on how to apply to study at The University of Nottingham is available here.

We recommend that application for admission to study at Nottingham should be received at least six weeks before the scholarship closing date to allow time for our Admissions office to process the application and confirm your offer, before you can apply for the scholarship. Any application for admission to study submitted later than six weeks before the scholarship closing date is not guaranteed to be processed in time.

Please note that you will not be able to apply for a scholarship without an offer to study. You will be required to enter your undergraduate UCAS id (for undergraduate scholarships) or postgraduate application id (for postgraduate scholarships) before you can proceed with your scholarship application. The system then checks this id to see if you have an offer for the 17/18 academic year. If you do not have an offer then you will not be able to apply.

APPLICATION DEAD LINE

Applications may be submitted up until the closing date for each scholarship – applications close at 12 mid-day (UK time) on the dates shown.

Results

Please note that once the scholarship results are known, you will receive an email to confirm the outcome of your scholarship application.  This will normally take place approximately 6 weeks after the closing date, however, in some cases this may take a little longer.

Jamb Sets To Announce New Policies Today Being Tuesday

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, which began a meeting on Monday, is expected to formally announce a new holistic policy Today, when the body is expected to conclude its ongoing deliberation.
The meeting, which involves admission officers of Nigerian tertiary institutions, is taking place at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.

Issues discussed at the meeting include the introduction of Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) to ensure quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.
An attendee at Monday’s meeting explained that the new policy is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.'
These institutions will write to JAMB to request for the students and also give them (students) three days to respond. Also, only three universities can request for a candidate if the policy is adopted.
The new policy is also expected to allow institutions in Nigeria peg their cut off point after meeting with their respective senates.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the new policy will also give the academic board or senate of an institution the power to ‘allocate percentages to JAMB, the school and O’level results as these will be calculated to get the students’ cut off marks for post-UTME.’
It was also learnt that JAMB wants to ensure there is a unified time for closing admission in all universities.

If the policy sails through, there will be a portal for admission which will be based on cut off points, quota system and catchment areas.
“The new system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points,” an admission officer for a tertiary institution who was at the meeting told PREMIUM TIMRS. “If a candidate does not meet the cut off, no matter whom he or she knows, such person cannot be admitted.”
The official said the system was demonstrated to all the attendees at Monday’s meeting, most of whom expressed satisfaction with it.

Also, the policy intends to make provisions for candidates to accept and reject any admission being offered to them.
The intended policy also looks out for candidates who are unable to go for National Youth Service, NYSC, because they do not have JAMB admission letters. This set of students could be asked to pay a fee, about N10,000 for regularisation and would be able to go for the youth service.
JAMB is expected to formally brief journalists on these new policies Today afternoon
