I was born into abject Poverty – Masterkraft Tells fans

Most likely the name Sunday Ginikachukwu Nweke would not ring a bell but once Masterkraft is mentioned, then most of Banky W, Flavour, and Phyno’s hit songs would come to mind.

No doubt, the ever smiling music producer is one of the best on the continent especially as he just concluded works with rave-of- the-moment American singer, Jason Derulo, but life has not always been a bed of roses for the beat maker.
In a chat with Saturday Beats, he hinted that he was born into abject poverty and life as a child in Ajegunle was like sleeping in thorns.

“Growing up in Ajegunle was an experience for me because I was raised in abject poverty. The only thing that gave me joy was music especially because I was born in a white garment church. Playing music in church gave me hope. At a point in my life, I had to hawk; I sold ‘pure water’, tin tomato and also tissue paper, that is just to mention a few.

At a time, I had to work as a houseboy just to survive and I did that for about two years. Then I complained to my father that I did not like the job and that I wanted to come back home. When I got back home, I began to play the piano. That’s when I began to produce music. My childhood was very tough and challenging but I am grateful to God that none of those things hindered my future,” the beat maker said.

Although he was a brilliant kid who dreamt of becoming an accountant, his hopes were unknowingly shattered by his parents even though he had a scholarship to attend two schools. He said, “I was a very intelligent student as a child and I remember that when I took my common entrance examination, I was the number one student in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government and the government gave me scholarship to two schools but my parents did not know the meaning of scholarship.

I tried to explain it to them but they preferred that I serve under an ‘oga’ for about six years. They believed that as soon as I was done, they would open a shop for me at Idumota and I would be selling jewellery. That was how I was not able to go to school and I went to serve someone for two years.”

Luck smiled his way in the guise of MI and Banky W, who he said gave him a breakthrough in his career. Masterkraft also acknowledged the role Kenny Ogungbe played in his life via his Kennis Music record label.
“I taught myself how to play the piano and I thought I would become a mogul by just playing the piano till I met a friend that played instruments.

He went for Star Quest and won, so he wanted me to produce for their group. At the time, when you won Star Quest, you would be signed under Kennis Music. When I did the first two songs for them, Kenny Ogungbe liked it and that was how I became a part of Kennis Music label. That was in 2009.

The turning point for me was when I produced a song and they needed a rap artiste on the song; so they called MI. He came to the studio, listened to the sound and asked if the song was produced in Nigeria. He later asked to see me. Instantly he called Banky W and told him about me. Banky tried calling me but I did not know it was him, so I did not pick his call, that was how he sent me a text message and I was so excited when I got the text. The next day, Banky W came and he told me about a song he was working on and in less than 30 minutes, I was done with the beat. He was so amazed that he promised that my name would be everywhere and that was how I made it to his album. I saw myself in the newspapers and it was Banky W that paid for it. From there, I started working with EME and I was the vocal coach for Wizkid and Skales,” Masterkraft said.

Lil-kesh explains himself more better - OWNER OF "YAGI" RECORD

Keshinro Ololade, aka Lil Kesh, speaks about his career, relationship with Olamide and his new record label
Was it your childhood dream to become a music artiste?
I have pretty much been around music all my life, and the love for music has gotten me this far. My dad is a pastor and he owns a church. However, it’s not like I made a conscious decision to become an artiste; it grew on me untill I knew this was what I wanted to do.

What was your dad’s reaction to your decision to become an artiste?
My dad was cool with it. He lets you do whatever you want to do. He feels that whatever his life story is doesn’t have to affect the way his children live their lives. According to what he used to tell me, everybody must live his or her individual stories. He watched me grow from being part of the choir, learning to play drums, and attending music shows. Till now, he gives me all the necessary support and respects my decisions.

Considering that your dad is a pastor, isn’t he bothered by your vulgar lyrics?
Those vulgar songs are basically about me doing my job and he doesn’t interfere. Besides, not all my songs are vulgar. I have recorded songs like Ishe, Semilore and others. However, the ones that go viral are the ones with vulgar lyrics. I understand my markets, and I know the demography I’m directing my music to, which is the youth and adults. I’m a blunt entertainer, but I consider my fans, and always try to give them what they want. But this year, I decided that I’ll feed my fans with more meaningful songs that will inspire them.

What inspires you to write such vulgar songs?
Most of those songs were not written; we just go into the studio and ‘vibe.’ However, my environment inspires me and it’s not like I deliberately try to be vulgar.

Beyond the stage persona, who is Keshinro Ololade as a person?
I have a dual personality in the sense that I could go into the studio and come up with crazy songs that would entertain people. I could also be home alone relaxing, and listening to soft and mid-tempo songs. Listening to my songs, some people may think I’m a loud and local boy, but they’re usually surprised when they meet me and see that I’m calm and cool-headed. I’m not that outgoing, except if I have to attend events.

What’s your educational background?
I went to a number of primary schools, all in Lagos. I also attended secondary school in Lagos before proceeding to the University of Lagos to study Linguistics. However, I had to defer my admission because of my hectic schedule. Right now, I’ve enrolled at the National Open University, where I’m studying Mass Communication.

Some people believe you came out of nowhere to rise to the top in the music industry.  Can you share some of your struggles?
I have always been a hustler. I started my career by attending several talent hunt competitions, and I won some of them which made me quite popular in school. At a point, I was always hanging around studios because I had no money to record songs.

How did you meet Olamide?
I recorded a song titled Lyrical in late 2013, and Olamide heard it sometime in 2014. Apparently, he loved it, and he said he wanted to meet me. When I met Olamide, he had a contract ready for me, and that was how my career kick-started. I was blessed enough to record a hit song within months, and my career has been growing ever since. I have always seen Olamide as a king, and I even respect him more now.

How would you describe Olamide as a boss?
Despite the fame and fortune around him, Olamide is just like the guy next door. He is easy-going and down-to-earth. He is friendly with everyone and he could eat from the same plate with you without airs and graces.

Was it really your label mate, Viktoh, who introduced you to Olamide?
Yes. Viktoh is a friend to Olamide’s younger brother, DJ Enimoney, and he had known Olamide for about five years before I came into the picture. We used to meet at some talent hunt competitions, and he was the one that played my song, Lyrical, to Olamide. He actually signed both of us on the same day.

It was reported that there’s bad blood between you and Viktoh?
That’s just the figment of some people’s imaginations. VIktoh will always be my brother. We all have our different times to shine.

Let’s talk about Shoki…
I think Shoki is my biggest song to date. It became popular barely weeks after it was released. Initially, I was in denial because I didn’t know the song was that big. At some point, people like American singer, Missy Elliot, uploaded a video of herself dancing to Shoki. To be honest, it put pressure on me, because it was almost bigger than Lil Kesh, the brand.

Your style of music is similar to Olamide’s. Wasn’t he afraid of you overshadowing him?
No, there’s no competition between us. Olamide built the YBNL family in a way that we all love one another. Even if he is meant to release a song, and one of his artistes also wants to release a song, he would defer his to allow his artiste’s song to be put out. Besides, I won’t say I decided to do music like Olamide; it came naturally to me. We’re both from Bariga, and we have the same musical influences. YBNL has a sound of its own; it is not an Olamide sound, or a Lil Kesh sound.

Do you feel you know enough about the music industry to float your own record label?
Olamide brought us up to know every single detail about the music business. There weren’t many protocols, and he made me know all the industry contacts needed for distribution, promotion, PR and basically all parts of the business. He didn’t treat me like an artiste, but as a brother. Anyway, my label, YAGI is directly under YBNL. Olamide still handles the business for me. I’m just responsible for myself financially, but anytime I want to drop a new single or video, Olamide knows about it. YBNL is still Lil Kesh’s management, and the idea of floating a new label was a joint decision.

When will you be signing your own artistes?
It might not be anytime soon, but we’re definitely going to do that. When I feel mentally and financially ready, I will cross that bridge. Right now, there’s still a lot of work to be done on Lil Kesh.

Do you still visit Bariga where you grew up?
No, I don’t.

Why is it so?
It’s called the hood for a reason, and I have to consider a lot of things before going. I’m like a king in Bariga, and a lot of people love me there. If I’m to go there, it has to be a grand entry with security in place because a lot of people would definitely troop out to the streets. Besides, my family does not stay there anymore. I have relocated them to a better neighborhood.

You have found fame and fortune at an early age. How have you been able to manage it?
I always say I may be 22 years old biologically, but in my head, I’m older than that. Age is not maturity. It is your experience that makes you, and I have seen a lot. From being in the ghetto to living a better life; these things have built me.

Let’s talk a bit about the Headies. Did you feel robbed that you didn’t get the Next Rated Award?
I have put that behind me as it isn’t relevant to my career. As far as I’m concerned, my award is living a good life. Awards don’t determine which artiste is the best. So far you are nominated for an award, you are a winner already.

You have also been nominated for this year’s Headies. Will you be motivating your fans to vote for you?
It’s not just about me and how I feel about these things, it’s about my fans. They supported my music this year, and that’s why the album got nominated. I’m going to post about the award on social media, and appeal to my fans for support.

Can you recall the most awesome part of your career?
Anytime I step on stage and thousands of people are screaming my name.

What’s the craziest experience you have had with a fan?
There was a time I was on Lagos Island, and some street boys stopped all the cars on the road, saying nobody should move until they had all taken pictures with me. It was crazy on that day as their action caused massive traffic build-up.

Has any female fan ever asked you to sign on her boobs?
Those things happen and I don’t even consider them as crazy anymore; it’s a normal thing.

This are all we got from him.. bye for now and keep visiting for more from us.. @ SoTechNaija

Huawei Plans to Raise Prices of Phones Available Online As Customs Duty Charges Increase

Days after the government announced a 10 percent basic customs duty (BCD) on smartphone manufacturers as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) came into practice, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has said it will marginally hike prices of its smartphones available online.

Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the launch of Honor 8 Pro smartphone, Allen Wang, Director, Product Center, Huawei India Consumer Business Group, said: "We have both online and offline businesses in India. In online, there will be a little cost increase for sure. But offline, there will be no impact."

Without mentioning when the price hike will be implemented, Wang, however, added that the company plans to optimise other price-guiding factors to minimise the impact of the additional tax burden on its consumers in the country.
"So far, for all our products, we have not increased any price. Price is not just dependent on one factor. When the business gets better and the volume becomes bigger, we may also save some cost," Wang told IANS.
Terming GST as a good move, Wang hoped it will have a long-lasting positive effect on the Indian economy.
"I think this policy [GST] is good for the country in the long term. And when the economy will become better, our business will become better," he noted.

Going forward, Huawei is set to bring more flagship products in India later this year.
"We have already had several small and big launches this year like Honor 6X and Honor 8 Lite. We promise that we have some new devices, new models coming in the second half of the year," Wang informed.
Huawei recently launched 17 new exclusive service centres across the country.

"The after-sales service is very important and a big concern for consumers. That's why we launched 17 exclusive service centres in almost all metro cities. Together, we have more than 200 multi-brand service centres in the country. It's like a long-term commitment to the market," the top Huawei executive said,
"For us, the Indian market is always important. No brand can ignore it." Wang said.

20 New WhatsApp Features Introduced and Discoverd in 2017

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world, used by over 1.2 billion people worldwide and 200 million in India alone. Despite its success, the Facebook-owned company has not become complacent and always keeps the competition on its toes by releasing new features every few weeks. 2017, of course, saw the overhauled WhatsApp Status (an aping of Snapchat), but there have been many other small updates this year that didn't get as much attention.  From increased media sharing limit to video streaming, we take a look at all the new WhatsApp features released this year alone. While going down this memory lane, we’ve ranked features in the order that we feel made the most impact (or will make, if in beta) in user experience.

1. New revamped Snapchat-like Status feature

Perhaps, one of the most important updates this year, the new Status feature was rolled out to all users globally in February. The new WhatsApp Status feature replaced the old text form of status to allow users to change their status to a short video or multiple photos that will automatically disappear in 24 hours. Even though this feature was clearly introduced to combat Snapchat competition, it overhauled the way users interacted on the app daily.

2. Media sharing limit increased to 30

This change is significant because WhatsApp is one of the primary platforms for media sharing after an event, get-together, or any social meeting where pictures and videos are taken. The media limit was first at 10, and this increase to 30 was a welcome change by all users. It was first spotted in Android beta in January, but was later rolled out on all platforms eventually.

3. Recall or Revoke feature

This feature is still not out in the stable version, but has been spotted on various occasions. It’s important on a chat app because it lets you recall sent messages. The feature in the many possible forms it could arrive would allow users to recall or 'unsend' messages they have been sent to their contacts, or even edit them. The feature, was earlier seen on iPhone beta version, and was also spotted recently on WhatsApp Web as well.

4. Easy Two-step verification

This feature was rolled out in February to all users as an optional security feature. With this feature, users are now able to verify their number when they install the app on a new device more securely. Users will have to provide a six-digit passcode (created by them using this feature) when registering their phone number with WhatsApp again - or any attempt to verify their phone number through the app. To know how to setup two-step verification, follow the step-by-step guide here.

5.Can transfer all types of file

The company is slowly rolling out support for all types of file transfers (including archives) on Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone with a limited number of users, removing any hindrance of file sharing on WhatsApp. This new feature will now allow you to share video in a wide variety of formats, MP3 songs, or even APK files for that matter on WhatsApp. The file sharing limit will still be at 128MB on iOS, 64MB on Web, and 100MB on Android.

6. Ability to queue messages on iPhone's

While WhatsApp had this ability on Android for a while now, iPhone users finally got it in January. This ability to queue messages even when in areas of poor or no connectivity was a big miss for iPhone users, as it prevented them to send messages at all in areas of poor connectivity. Now, all users can just send a WhatsApp message to a group/individual even when connectivity is unavailable, and the message will be sent automatically once they get connectivity again.

7. Reincarnation of Text Status features

After the introduction of the new Status feature, support for the old Text Status feature was ended. This created a huge uproar among users, and the feature was then brought back on popular demand. The feature is now available for iPhone and Android users both.

8. Photo Bundling, Video Streaming, Photo Filter features

WhatsApp introduced some nifty features to elevate media sharing. This includes photo bundling into an album, video streaming, and photo filters. The Photo Bundling feature allows users to send photos and videos to your contacts as an album. WhatsApp users can now send a bunch of photos to their friends, who will receive them bundled as an album and not as before, one after another. Once the album is opened, all images are shown on a single page. The feature is already available for iPhone users and is in beta for Android users.

The video streaming feature was first spotted in Android beta, but was rolled out in the stable version to iPhone users first. This feature allows its users to watch shared videos while they're being downloaded in the background. It will use your Wi-Fi or cellular data to buffer a shared video, while it's still in the downloading process in the background. Earlier, WhatsApp users had to wait until a video gets completely downloaded to watch it - depending upon WhatsApp auto-download setting.

Recently, WhatsApp also added the ability to add colour filters to the media that you send in chats for iPhone users. Head to WhatsApp, go to the individual or group chat that you want to send the media to, capture or select a photo, video, or GIF, and swipe up. Swiping up will pull out five photo filters that you can choose from. These are Pop, B&W, Cool, Film, and Chrome, but we expect WhatsApp to add more in the future.

9. Night Mode, Quick Reply button, and ability for Siri to read messages out loud

For iPhone users, WhatsApp recently introduced a new night mode feature for its camera for low-light photography. Interestingly, the Night Mode icon appears by default only when the camera sensor detects low-light conditions, and not otherwise.
In April, WhatsApp also gave more abilities to Siri. Four key highlights include - you can ask Siri to read out your latest messages; visual improvements to the Calls tab, Contact info, and Group info screens; ability to select multiple statuses at once in the My Updates screen which you can forward and delete; and support for Persian language.
Another iPhone-only feature was the Quick Reply feature that allowed users to reply to an individual just by swiping right on a specific text in chats. This reply shortcut is particularly useful in group chats where you speak to multiple users at once.

10. Chat improvements

To improve the basic handling of chat and the way you communicate with the screen while chatting, WhatsApp has made several tweaks this year. Most notable is that Android users got a new separate video call button and saw the relocation of the attachment button. Earlier, the video calling feature was hidden within or grouped with the voice calling button, and one would need to tap twice in order to choose video calling from a pop-up menu. The attachment button was relocated to the bottom within the text bar. You'll now see the little attachment feature right next to the camera icon in the text bar. Notably, the text bar too got a new look with rounded corners rather than the square-shaped box of old.

With the new Pinned Chats feature introduced in May for Android users, WhatsApp allowed pinning of up to three contacts on top of rest of the conversations. WhatsApp is also testing a new feature that lets you send multiple contacts at once. Earlier, users were limited to send just one contact at a time, but now that limit has been revoked. This feature was spotted on Android beta, and should roll out for everyone soon.
Spotted in Android beta was also emoji search that brings the ability to search for emojis based on keywords. This nifty feature was first possible through third-party apps, but now the ability is coming to the in-app keyboard as well. There were also new font shortcuts spotted in beta for bold, italics, and strike through. This would remove the need to add text inside asterisks while typing for making it bold, or type phrase between underscores to italicise.

11. Number Changing  Capability and Live Location feature

Lastly but importantly, WhatsApp was recently reported to be testing a new feature on the Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile platform that could make life less painful when changing your contact number. In trying to ease the transition, it is testing a feature that will notify your friends and family about your number change for you. The Live Location sharing feature was also spotted on Android beta, hinting that it will make its way to WhatsApp soon. This will presumably turn location sharing on as a broadcast - enabling contacts to see each other on a map.
