Magic mushrooms could be the key to treating people with depression | SoTechNaija

A NEW study suggests that a hallucinogen found in magic mushrooms may be the next step in treating people with depression.
The ingredient in question is called psilocybin, which is a naturally occurring psychedelic and reportedly works by “resetting” the brain.
A team of researchers at Imperial College London conducted a small study of 19 patients who were diagnosed with depression, in which they gave them a single dose of psilocybin and monitored their brain activity before and after.

The treatment produced “rapid and sustained antidepressant effects”, with half of the patients no longer showing signs of depression, along with a change in their brain activity that lasted up to five weeks.
The scans that were performed before the drug was administered and then again a day later revealed two key areas of the brain were impacted.
The amygdala, which is responsible for the response and memory of emotions particularly fear and anxiety, became less active.
And the default mode network, which relates to multiple interconnected regions of the brain, became more stabilised.

After the drug was administered patients reported feeling “rebooted” and showed signed of reduced stress and anxiety. Picture: Peter Dejong/APSource:Supplied

According to Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, the head of psychedelic research at Imperial, the drug seemed to have a “resetting” effect on the brain.
“Patients were very ready to use this analogy. Without any priming they would say, ‘I’ve been reset, reborn, rebooted’, and one patient said his brain had been defragged and cleaned up,” he told BBC News .

“Psilocybin may be giving these individuals the temporary ‘kick start’ they need to break out of their depressive states and these imaging results do tentatively support a ‘reset’ analogy. Similar brain effects to these have been seen with electroconvulsive therapy.”
It is important to note that this study was conducted in a regulated environment by professionals and the research team warns people that self medicating isn’t guaranteed to return the same results.

Dr Carhart-Harris and his team have conducted similar trials before, administering 12 patients with small doses of psilocybin and recording relief from depression symptoms in eight of the original 12 subjects.
This time around they observed more closely the specific effects that the drug has on the brain.

It is acknowledged in the study that the results may be limited by the small number of subjects involved and the lack of a control group, but it is a promising start to finding a new way to help people who suffer from depression.
In order to expand their understanding on the role that this drug plays in relieving symptoms of depression they are set to start a new trial early next year comparing the effectiveness of psilocybin against a popular antidepressant.

Apple Watch notification helps save man's life: 'It would have been fatal' | SoTechNaija

An Apple Watch notification helped save a man’s life after it alerted him to needing immediate medical attention for a blood clot in his lungs.

James Green, a podcast and reporter, from Brooklyn, New York, tweeted: “Never thought a stupid lil wrist computer I bought two years ago would save my life.
“Saw my heart rate go up, ended up being a pulmonary embolism.”

The 28-year-old says he owes his life to the HeartWatch app, which monitors a person’s heart rate constantly throughout the day and notifies them when it goes above or below a certain threshold.
He told The Telegraph his doctor was glad he called, telling him that if he had waited any longer “it would have been fatal”.

Mr Green describes himself as “a serial health tracker”, explaining: “I wanted data on my heart since I had a previous pulmonary embolism.
“And my watch is too old to have the new software update that enabled the heart rate alerts.”

Recalling the moment he realised something was wrong, he said: “I got an alert from Heart Watch that my heart rate was continually above my resting heart rate of 54, even when I was just sitting at my desk.

Hustler founder Larry Flynt offers $10 million for dirt leading to Trump's impeachment | SoTechNaija

Hustler founder Larry Flynt is running a full-page ad in Sunday’s Washington Post offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the impeachment of President Trump, Fox Business reports.

Anchor Liz Claman tweeted a photo of the ad, which reads: “Larry Flynt and Hustler magazine announce a cash offer of up to $10 million for information leading to the impeachment and removal from office of Donald J. Trump.”
In the ad, Flynt airs several grievances about Trump’s actions as president, including his firing of FBI director James Comey and his “gross nepotism and appointment of unqualified persons to high office.”
“Impeachment would be a messy, contentious affair, but the alternative – three more years of destabilizing dysfunction – is worse,” the ad reads. “Both good Democrats and good Republicans who put country over party did it before with Watergate. To succeed, impeachment requires unimpeachable evidence. That’s why I am making this offer.”

The porn producer notes in the ad that this “is not my first rodeo,” citing past rewards for information on Republicans like former Rep. Bob Livingston in 1999, who resigned from Congress after admitting to an extramarital affair, and Sen. David Vitter, who weathered a prostitution scandal in 2007.
“Sure I could use that $10 million to buy luxuries or further my businesses,” Flynt writes, “but what good would that do me in a world devastated by the most powerful moron in history?”

Why Facebook User should Downlaod Massenger Lite instead of messenger | SoTechNaija

Statistically speaking, there’s a pretty good chance you’re one of the 1.2 billion people who use Facebook Messenger at least once a month. Anecdotally, there’s a decent chance you harbor deep resentments toward its sluggishness, its bloat, and its liberally borrowed Snapchat features. Friends, there’s a better way. It’s called Messenger Lite.

You may have heard of Messenger Lite already, and if you live outside of the US, UK, Canada, or Ireland, you may already be using it. Facebook first launched Lite a year ago, intending it for markets whose fickle or low-bandwidth internet connections would collapse under the weight of the full-fledged Messenger platform. This week, Lite launched for those four more developed markets as well. And guess what? You should switch over to it immediately.

That directive comes with a couple of caveats: If you have an iPhone, this does not apply to you. Sorry! Facebook only released Messenger Lite on Android, with no signs of an iOS version in the offing. Secondly, if you are for some reason heavily invested in the Facebook Messenger games ecosystem, which I know must exist because there is a game controller tab in the Messenger app every time I open it, you should stick with the full-fledged version. Also, Lite doesn't support Secret Conversations, Facebook's end-to-end encrypted chat, but hey, that's what Signal's for anyway.
And that’s it! Everyone else: Let’s explore why Lite is absolutely right for you.

Lite As a Feather

It’s easier to focus on what Lite does have than what it doesn’t, because the list is so short. When you open Lite up, you get three gloriously straightforward tabs: Home, which shows your existing chats. Contacts, which, you know, and Profile, where you can adjust your notification settings, look at your message requests, switch accounts, report any issues, and that’s pretty much it.
No, really, that’s all! There’s no funhouse mirror room of tabs within tabs like you find in Messenger, in which opening the app presents you with, by my count, 10 tappable options (not including your recent conversations): Home, Contacts, Camera, Games, and Bots tabs, a Compose bubble, a Profile icon, and the option to sort chats by Messages, Active, Groups, and Calls.
I got tired just counting those, much less navigating them. And it never stops. Open a composition window in Messenger and you get options for your camera, for images, for voice dictation, for emoji and GIFs and stickers. You can call or video chat. Press the "plus" sign and you can send money, or your location, or summon a Food Network branded extension for some ungodly reason. You can send a thumbs up. You can also, I’m fairly certain, still type actual words.

Some of those choices persist in Lite, but not nearly enough to cause paralysis. You can still send a sticker, but it doesn’t animate. You can still snap a photo or dictate or call. But Lite does not contain the intricate, endless tunnel system that Messenger employs to squeeze all of its features into one bitty app. You can’t get lost in Lite. You can, though, send and receive messages quickly and efficiently, which seems just about perfect for an app called Messenger.

As user experience goes, I’m not sure what else to tell you, other than that all of the puffery in and around Messages mostly exists to keep you staring at Messages rather than necessarily improving your life and mind. You only have so many engaged minutes to give in one lifetime. Don’t spend them lobbing ingredients at a Food Network bot.

Shoot the Messenger

Lite doesn’t just save you time because there’s less to fiddle with. It also spares you very real seconds—and frustration—by not sputtering under its own weight, as its fuller-featured counterpart most certainly can and does. It’s a greyhound next to a slobbering Messenger mastiff.

Slimming down has other, unseen benefits as well. Lite takes up less than 10MB on your phone—and nearly 10 times less space than Messenger. The side benefit of stripping down so many features is that you use far less data. And it won’t stress your battery as much.
If you’re a Messenger power user, well, frankly you haven’t read this far because you’ve already switched back to your Word With Friends game. But everyone else: Switch to Lite. You can still get in touch with anyone who has a Facebook account. You can still make free calls over Wi-Fi. You can still give a thumbs up. But you can do it all without feeling like you’ve been dropped inside a digital labyrinth, a social (media) experiment to see just how many times you can tap your screen without actually accomplishing anything.

Civilization may well have reached a point where contacting people over Facebook is an occasional necessity. But Messenger Lite at least means you can go ahead and get it over with.

Las Vegas Shooting: Live Updates | SoTechNaija

Right Now The authorities say the gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, is dead.
• More than 50 people died and 400 others were injured in a shooting at an outdoor concert near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, the police said. It was one of the deadliest mass shootings in United States history.
• The police said that officers found Mr. Paddock dead in his room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said he was believed to be the only assailant.
• Automatic gunfire can be heard in videos from the grounds of the concert, a country music event known as the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Concertgoers ran and ducked for cover, and thousands of people fled.

The police say the gunman is dead.

Sheriff Lombardo described Mr. Paddock as a “local resident,” but said that his background was largely a mystery and that his motive was unknown. He predicted “a long and tedious investigation.”
The police said that Mr. Paddock opened fire on the crowd from a hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on Sunday night. The Las Vegas Police Department SWAT team found him dead.
“As far as his history and background, we haven’t completed that part of the investigation yet,” Sheriff Lombardo said of the suspect. “But we located numerous firearms within the room that he occupied.”

“You could see people getting shot”

The gunfire began during a performance by the singer Jason Aldean, the closing act of the Route 91 Harvest Festival, according to Gail Davis, who was in the audience of more than 22,000.
The scene erupted into chaos as thousands of people began to panic. “Everyone was running,” she said. “You could see people getting shot.”
She said a police officer had guided her and her husband to safety as gunshots ricocheted around them. As they ran, Ms. Davis heard a voice on the officer’s radio say the words “active shooters.”
“I’ve never been that scared in my life,” she said. “To have this happen, I can’t wrap my mind around it.”
Ms. Davis said many children were attending the concert. Amid the confusion, she heard one woman scream, “I can’t find my daughter.”

One police officer has died.

The police said in a statement that one off-duty Las Vegas police officer was killed in the shooting. At a news conference earlier in the day, Sheriff Lombardo had said that two off-duty officers were killed.
The name of the deceased officer has not been released because his family has not been notified, the police said.
Two on-duty officers were injured in the shooting. One was in stable condition; the other had what the police described as “non-life-threatening wounds.”
Additionally, an off-duty officer from Bakersfield, Calif., who was attending the concert was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Police locate gunman’s ‘companion.’

The police said they were “confident but not 100 percent sure” that they had located Marilou Danley, a woman they described as “a companion that is traveling with” Mr. Paddock.

The authorities have called her a “person of interest” and the shooter’s “roommate.” The police also said they had located two cars whose license plates were registered to Mr. Paddock.

Politicians offer thoughts and prayers.

President Trump responded to the shooting on Monday by tweeting his “warmest condolences” for the families of the victims.

Other lawmakers woke up to the news and offered thoughts and prayers. Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada called the shooting a “heinous act of violence.”
Senator James Lankford, a Republican from Oklahoma, referred to the shooting as a “terror attack,” although as of 4:30 a.m. in Las Vegas, law enforcement officials had not identified a motive for the gunman.

The House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi of California, said she was “horrified and heartbroken” by the shooting.

Trump attacks San Juan mayor over hurricane response | SoTechNaija

Washington (CNN) - President Donald Trump launched an attack on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz on Saturday for criticizing the White House's hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, accusing her of "poor leadership" and suggesting that the island's residents are not doing enough to help themselves.
"The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump," the President tweeted from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is spending the weekend. "Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort."
The spectacle of Trump's comments slamming Cruz and others on their own response efforts as Puerto Rico struggles to deal with disaster that left millions without power and with limited access to water -- and as Trump comes under fire for what some have called a slow federal reaction -- sparked a firestorm of reaction online, including from the creator of the Broadway musical "Hamilton," Lin-Manuel Miranda, who said that Trump was going "straight to hell."
"You're going straight to hell, @realDonald Trump. No long lines for you," tweeted Miranda, who is of Puerto Rican descent. "Someone will say, 'Right this way, sir.' They'll clear a path."
Later Saturday, Vice President Mike Pence defended the President's remarks in an interview with Orlando television station WKMG.
"Well, it is frustrating, I expect, to millions of Americans to hear rhetoric coming out from some in Puerto Rico, particularly the mayor of San Juan, instead of focusing on results," Pence said.
Pence said he learned that "while our joint field operation at the convention center in San Juan has more than 1,000 personnel working out in a football field environment, the mayor of San Juan has only visited our joint field operation once." He added that he would encourage her to come alongside Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló and other officials "who are focusing on continuing to make the steady progress that we are making in Puerto Rico."
In the series of early-morning tweets, Trump also lauded the federal government's response on the island, which is still grappling with the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria. The President said that the 10,000 federal workers there are doing a "fantastic job."
"The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones etc., have done an amazing job," he wrote. "Puerto Rico was totally destroyed."
Trump's early praise of relief efforts, however, does not appear to match the reality on the ground. Puerto Rico, which is home to 3.4 million people, is facing a humanitarian crisis, and many of its people remain without power and water. Sixteen people have died, according to government officials, but that number could well rise with the full range of devastation not yet known.
In an interview with MSNBC, Cruz said she wasn't making "nasty comments" about Trump in remarks earlier this week criticizing the administration's statements lauding the response, adding that her only goal was to save lives.
"I was asking for help," she said. "I wasn't saying anything nasty about the President."
Trump's comments come ahead of a planned visit to Puerto Rico on Tuesday. The President is scheduled to speak with Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Brock Long, Rosselló and other Puerto Rican officials later Saturday.
Rosselló said Saturday morning that his previous conversations with Trump didn't square up with the President's tweets and that Trump had "reiterated his commitment with this effort."
"I do reiterate that the only way for this to work is for us to have collaboration," Rosselló said. "And let me stress this, I am committed to collaborating with everybody. This is a point where we can't look at small differences. We can't establish differences based on politics."
While Trump and other administration officials have repeatedly lauded the federal government's response to Maria, some have said that the administration has moved more slowly than it did in responding to the recent storms that battered Texas and Florida.
Other critics have drawn comparisons to President George W. Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, particularly given the race and class of most victims in both disasters. Katrina, of course, became a political disaster for the Bush presidency.
When asked for his reaction to President Trump's tweets, Russel Honoré, the retired general appointed by Bush to take over the federal response to Katrina in 2005, said he had none.
"I have no reaction. The mayor's living on a cot, and I hope the President has a good day of golf," he told CNN.
Earlier this week, Honoré told CNN that the President's response to Maria shows that he doesn't care about the poor or people of color.
"The President has shown again he don't give a damn about poor people," Honoré told CNN's Erin Burnett. "He doesn't give a damn about people of color. And the SOB that rides around in Air Force One is denying services needed by the people of Puerto Rico. I hate to say it that way but there's no other way to say it."
In his interview Saturday with WKMG, Pence took issue with Honore's characterization.
"Well, I would suggest, with great respect to that retired general and respect for the work he's done in the past, that the Department of Defense -- 16 different Navy ships in the region, the USS Comfort will be there in a matter of days," Pence said. "I was able to inform Governor Rosselló the USS Wasp will be arriving with 16 helicopters tomorrow. We have literally 10,000 federal officials on the ground, 4,500 National Guard have been there from early on, more are on the way."

A 'good news story'

Thursday, acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke also stirred controversy after she told reporters she was "very satisfied" with the federal response since Maria made landfall, calling it a "good news story."
"I know it is really a good news story in terms of our ability to reach people and the limited number of deaths that have taken place in such a devastating hurricane," Duke said.
That prompted a sharp retort from San Juan's mayor in a CNN interview.
"This is, damn it, this is not a good news story," Mayor Cruz said. "This is a 'people are dying' story. This is a 'life-or-death' story. This is, 'there's a truckload of stuff that cannot be taken to people' story. This is a story of a devastation that continues to worsen."
Dan Scavino, the White House social media director, tweeted on Saturday that Cruz "has been hating on @realDonaldTrump long before he was our President."
In a separate tweet, Scavino described San Juan's mayor as "the perfect example of an opportunistic politician."
In his own Saturday morning tweets, Trump also lashed out at the media for what he said was biased coverage, saying that the "Fake News Networks are working overtime in Puerto Rico."
"Fake News CNN and NBC are going out of their way to disparage our great First Responders as a way to 'get Trump,'" he tweeted. "Not fair to FR or effort!"

Democratic lawmakers react

Trump's comments were criticized by a number of Democrats, who took issue with the President's rhetoric in the middle of a domestic disaster.
Rep. Al Green of Texas told CNN's Ana Cabrera on Saturday afternoon that he thought Trump's comments showed he cared less about Puerto Rico because it was unimportant to his reelection and added that he saw racial undertones in the President's remarks.
"If they were all Anglos, I don't believe the President would have the attitude that he has, because you don't hear that kind of dog whistle, of people not wanting to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, when the people are Anglos," Green said. "That's something reserved for people of color."
Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, meanwhile, called for an apology from the President.
"First thing Trump should do on Tues when he visits #PuertoRico for the first time since #HurricaneMaria devastated the island is apologize," Markey tweeted.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York called Trump's remarks "offensive."
"When millions in Puerto Rico are in crisis, the president should be better than this," she tweeted.
Sen. Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat facing trial for federal bribery charges, tweeted that Trump should be doing more to help the territory, suggesting his response might be slower because Puerto Rico has no electoral votes.
"I know Puerto Rico doesn't get Electoral College votes, Mr. President, but there are real Americans there suffering. Time to do more," he wrote.
In another tweet, Menendez declared the situation in Puerto Rico "worse" than Hurricane Katrina.
Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said Puerto Rico was in "crisis" and Trump should "stop playing politics with their lives."
"The definition of 'poor leadership' is sitting at your golf club while millions of US citizens beg for your help, @realDonaldTrump," she tweeted.
Don Beyer, a Democratic representative from Virginia, noted in a series of tweets that the President had ignored the people of Puerto Rico for days, instead "picking a fight with athletes while a humanitarian crisis grew in Puerto Rico."
"You focused on aid efforts in TX & FL but ignored Puerto Rico. Now you attack San Juan's mayor for saying 'people are dying.' THEY ARE DYING," he wrote.
Amid the criticisms, Trump took to Twitter later Saturday afternoon to praise several Puerto Rican officials, including Rosselló; US Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp, an independent; and Republican Congresswoman Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon.
"#FakeNews critics are working overtime, but we're getting great marks from the people that truly matter! #PRStrong" Trump wrote.
Trump continued to fault the news coverage of his administration's response in tweets Saturday night.
"Because of #FakeNews my people are not getting the credit they deserve for doing a great job," he wrote. "As seen here, they are ALL doing a GREAT JOB!"
At a news conference Saturday afternoon, Mapp said the vice president and his wife, Karen Pence, would arrive in St. Croix on Friday to assess the hurricane damage. He also said Trump did not rule out a visit to the territory during a phone call Saturday, but the President was trying to visit both Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in one day, which posed logistical challenges.

Administration update

FEMA said in a news release Saturday that urban search-and-rescue teams, working alongside local law enforcement, have scoured the island and rescued 843 people. In addition, 11 highways have been cleared, 70% of ports and 60% of gas stations are operating, and half of the grocery and big box stores are open, the release said.
While the release said power has been restored to 59 hospitals, FEMA official Alejandro de la Campa told reporters only 5% of electricity had been restored in the island as of Saturday.
The president of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, Elí Díaz Atienza, gave a breakdown of the water service restoration effort to San Juan radio station WIPR, saying water is running to about 55% of the city.
