Juan Williams say's: Trump's war on media is truly dangerous | SoTechNaija
You stick to the facts, and let readers and viewers realize the alarming dereliction of public trust from a high government official.
Then comes a response from Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary.
"If you want to go after General [John] Kelly that's up to you, but I think that if you want to get into a debate with a four-star Marine general, I think that's something highly inappropriate," Sanders said.
Let’s review this effort to normalize lying by a White House official.
In a democracy — government by the people and for the people — it is now “highly inappropriate” to tell the truth about a Chief of Staff who tells confirmed falsehoods?
That appears to be President Trump’s opinion. He said in the Oval Office this month that it was “frankly disgusting” that the press is “able to write whatever they want to write.”
Clearly the president has an authoritarian bent when it comes to journalism. His latest comments fit with past labeling of straight news reporters as “dishonest,” “scum” and the “enemy of the American people.”
“I hate some of these people, I hate 'em,” Trump said about reporters at a Michigan rally late last year, a month after he won the presidency. “I would never kill them. I would never do that.”
He then paused smiled and joked, “No, I wouldn't. I would never kill 'em.”
But he did direct tirades at straight news reporters covering his campaign and have his supporters turn to curse and threaten them at rallies.
And Trump did ask his Twitter followers: “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for the country.”
A corrupt President Nixon expressed similar thoughts about going after television stations owned by The Washington Post during the paper’s probe into the Watergate scandal.
Trump’s appetite for shutting down the free press is a reminder of his open admiration for strong men dictators like Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Turkey’s Recep Erdogan and the Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte. Those strongmen limit the freedom of the press and, in some cases, kill and jail journalists.
Earlier this year, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., responded to Trump calling the press the “enemy” of the American people by saying that is “how dictators get started.”
Trump, like those dictators, wants to control what the public knows. His goal is to shape reality in order to manufacture public approval of his leadership — which is at an all-time low for a president during his first year.
And as brazen as that strategy is in a country with constitutional protections for freedom of the press, the bigger shock is that it is having some success.
This is especially true among Republicans.
A Vanity Fair/60 Minutes poll from April found 36 percent of Republicans say they believe freedom of the press “does more harm than good.”
Recently, the president called attention to a Politico/Morning Consult poll that found 46 percent of Americans believe the media “fabricates stories” to damage him and his administration. In the same poll, 37 percent said the media does not fabricate and 17 percent said they didn’t know.
Trump’s desire to make the American news media into his version of Pravda — the Russian government’s propaganda sheet — is being criticized even by some on the right.
“This isn’t a game. It isn’t just Trump being Trump. It is a new front in his endless attack on a central pillar of our liberties — a free press,” GOP strategist Rick Wilson, a longtime critic of the president, wrote recently in the Daily Beast.
Bernie Goldberg, a Fox News commentator, wrote this rebuke on his website:
“As with so many things, this president is just plain wrong. Journalists have biases; they make mistakes; sometimes they’re sloppy; and worst of all, sometimes they have a political agenda. But fabricating stories that they know are not true, inventing fake news sources: that is so rare as to be virtually nonexistent.”
Bret Baier, the Fox News anchor and my colleague, said last week that Trump’s criticism of the press is now “way over the top.”
Another colleague, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, said in a separate interview he dislikes media personalities who join Trump in “bashing the media, because oftentimes what they are bashing is stuff that we on the news side are doing.”
As a journalist, I have been critical of President Trump. That has led to Twitter taunting against me by Trump. And then there are the countless racist and hateful comments posted to my social media pages by self-described Trump supporters.
When National Public Radio (NPR) fired me in 2010 for speaking my mind about fear of Muslim terrorism, principled conservatives — even those who disliked me — rose to my defense and called NPR out for their censorship and thug tactics to stifle free speech.
When the Obama administration’s press shop waged a campaign to delegitimize Fox News by excluding it from a White House pool interview in 2009, journalists — even those who didn’t like Fox — stood up and said that was wrong.
If people were outraged by what NPR did to me and what the Obama White House did to Fox, then their principles must dictate that they are similarly outraged by Trump’s treatment of the press.
Recall what President Jefferson wrote in his famous letter to Edward Carrington:
“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
How far we’ve come from Jefferson’s wisdom to Trump’s ugly, ignorant threats.
Fake News, indeed.

Hustler founder Larry Flynt offers $10 million for dirt leading to Trump's impeachment | SoTechNaija
“Impeachment would be a messy, contentious affair, but the alternative – three more years of destabilizing dysfunction – is worse,” the ad reads. “Both good Democrats and good Republicans who put country over party did it before with Watergate. To succeed, impeachment requires unimpeachable evidence. That’s why I am making this offer.”
The porn producer notes in the ad that this “is not my first rodeo,” citing past rewards for information on Republicans like former Rep. Bob Livingston in 1999, who resigned from Congress after admitting to an extramarital affair, and Sen. David Vitter, who weathered a prostitution scandal in 2007.
“Sure I could use that $10 million to buy luxuries or further my businesses,” Flynt writes, “but what good would that do me in a world devastated by the most powerful moron in history?”

This Woman Holds the Guinness World Record for Longest Eyelashes
When you think of beauty-related Guinness World Records, those unbelievably long, curly fingernails probably come to mind. But forget everything you thought you knew: The actual wildest body-part-related record definitely goes to the world's longest eyelashes. They're almost 5 inches long and took their owner nearly 50 years to grow. NBD.According to the Guinness World Records, You Jianxia of Shanghai, who was born in 1968, has a lash on her left upper eyelid that measures a whopping 12.4 centimeters (about 4.88 inches). And since the record was actually set on June 28, 2016, it's possible that Jianxia's eyelashes have grown even longer in the past 14 months. Do they grow that fast, though? Does she trim them? Has she considered shampooing them? Do they get split ends? Do they tickle her face? Has she ever tried Latisse? I NEED answers.
All the Guinness World Records publishers shared about Jianxia in a press release promoting the 2018 edition, which includes Jianxia's record, is that she discovered the scarily long lash "during an 18-month nature retreat she embarked on in 2013." According to the publishers, "She puts the growth down to the life she leads at one with nature." BRB, scheduling a camping trip to grow out my lashes.
Jianxia will be in good company in the Guinness World Records 2018 book, which hit shelves last week, according to the release. One particular addition includes a shockingly long set of fingernails. The latest record was set by Houston-based nail artist Ayanna Williams, 60, who grew out her nails for 23 years until they reached their current length of almost 19 feet. In case you were wondering, they can take almost an entire week to paint and make putting on pants extra difficult. And if you're interested in giving Williams a run for her money, her strategy for growing out her nails includes cleaning them daily with antibacterial soap and avoiding washing the dishes (I'm sold!).

Jamb Sets To Announce New Policies Today Being Tuesday
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, which began a meeting on Monday, is expected to formally announce a new holistic policy Today, when the body is expected to conclude its ongoing deliberation.
The meeting, which involves admission officers of Nigerian tertiary institutions, is taking place at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.
Issues discussed at the meeting include the introduction of Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) to ensure quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process, PREMIUM TIMES learnt.
An attendee at Monday’s meeting explained that the new policy is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.'
These institutions will write to JAMB to request for the students and also give them (students) three days to respond. Also, only three universities can request for a candidate if the policy is adopted.
The new policy is also expected to allow institutions in Nigeria peg their cut off point after meeting with their respective senates.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the new policy will also give the academic board or senate of an institution the power to ‘allocate percentages to JAMB, the school and O’level results as these will be calculated to get the students’ cut off marks for post-UTME.’
It was also learnt that JAMB wants to ensure there is a unified time for closing admission in all universities.
If the policy sails through, there will be a portal for admission which will be based on cut off points, quota system and catchment areas.
“The new system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points,” an admission officer for a tertiary institution who was at the meeting told PREMIUM TIMRS. “If a candidate does not meet the cut off, no matter whom he or she knows, such person cannot be admitted.”
The official said the system was demonstrated to all the attendees at Monday’s meeting, most of whom expressed satisfaction with it.
Also, the policy intends to make provisions for candidates to accept and reject any admission being offered to them.
The intended policy also looks out for candidates who are unable to go for National Youth Service, NYSC, because they do not have JAMB admission letters. This set of students could be asked to pay a fee, about N10,000 for regularisation and would be able to go for the youth service.
JAMB is expected to formally brief journalists on these new policies Today afternoon

Why The Crab Has No Head And How The first River Started: Episode 1
A long time ago, when God made this earth, he choose the mighty elephant to be king of the world. The elephant and his subjects roamed through the dark green forest, and since there were no rivers in those days, God made a pond for them to drink from.
Now one day, the elephant trumpeted loudly, and called for his friends; the hawk and the crab."Tomorrow", he announced, 'I am going for hunting in the forest, and you must come with me.'
The hawk was overjoyed and flew away to get his bow and arrows, but the poor crab was a slow-moving creature and could not hold any hunting weapons. But he was determined not to be left out, so he crawled and began to think hard about the problem.
The next morning all three creatures meet on the edge of the forest and while the hawk and elephant went out with their bows and arrows to a section of the forest where they knew they will find plenty of games, the crab dragged a long net behind him, set it up on a spot he had chosen, and waited.
Presently, a wounded animal rushed away from the elephant and the hawk, straight into the crabs net and seizing a large piece of wood, the crab quickly beat the animal at its head so that it dies at ones.
This happened again and again. If the elephant or the hawk killed animal outright, then they put it beside them for themselves, but if they only wounded one, the poor creature rushed away towards the crabs net. Once it was entangled there, the crab soon dispatched it with his heavy stick, removed and hid the arrow that it had wounded it, and put the carcass on his own pile.
By the afternoon, the elephant had killed five antelope and the hawk three, and each taught he had done very well.
'Lets go and find the crab,' suggested the elephant. 'I don't suppose the poor thing has managed to catch any thing t all'
How amazed they were to find the crab sitting proudly beside the carcasses of ten animals, all much bigger than himself. The hawk began congratulating him but the elephant was furious that the crab had killed more animals than he had, and shouted:
'Hawk! kill the wretched crab. I, your king, order you to do so. Cut of his head at once!
'Oh, sir! Oh, king!' begged the crab. 'Please do not kill me. I will give you all this meat and never come near you again if only you will let me live.'
At last the elephant consented and seizing the..
